About Amy

My name is Amy Adams and I have been in Education for over 20 years. I received my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Texas A&M University. I taught 1st Grade for 18 years and loved it! My favorite part of teaching 1st Grade was teaching students to read and watching their world open up! I received my Master's degree in Educational Leadership from Stephen F. Austin University two years ago. I moved roles to become an Instructional Specialist at an elementary school. I love my new position because I get to work with teachers and help them create intervention lessons for their students. I have vast experience in helping all children become successful in school. I hope to become an assistant principal in the next year. I look forward to working with and helping your child!

About the lesson

I love getting to know my students, learning their specific needs and personalities, and tailoring my lessons to fit them. The most important part of tutoring, for me, is to help my students build confidence and enjoy learning! I start with an "intake session" where I get to know my student with engaging activities and also with a variety of assessments. At the end of the first session, I meet with the parents to review the assessments, share what I found the student's needs to be, and hear feedback and needs from parents as well. We then make a plan and goals for our tutoring sessions.
Each tutoring session is 60 minutes. I start with a warm-up to cover the skills that we are spiraling each week. We then move on to a phonics activity based on the student's needs - letter sounds, vowel patterns, word building, etc. After that, we read the story of the day, which incorporates the phonics skill we just focused on. While reading the story, I work with my student on in depth questions to ensure they are understanding the story. We follow that with a comprehension activity. If there is time, we will also do a writing activity - I love building students' love of writing! I find writing prompts that will engage your child and motivate them to write. I like to close out our tutoring sessions with a quick, fun activity such as a game or joke telling! :)
It is very important to me that my students enjoy our tutoring sessions and that we build a relationship - that is what makes my tutoring sessions successful and motivates the students to work hard and learn.
