About Amanda

🟡 Hi, I’m Amanda!
I help adults and teens speak real Brazilian Portuguese with confidence, even if they feel shy or are starting from zero. I’m a Brazilian native, fluent in Spanish, and I can communicate in English clearly and comfortably.

I hold a degree in Languages (Letras) from UFAL (University in Brazil) and completed formal training in Portuguese–Spanish / Spanish–Portuguese Translation at Lenguas Vivas Institute (Buenos Aires, Argentina).

I’ve been teaching Portuguese and Spanish since 2014 to university students, professionals, and teens from different countries.

1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?
I am Brazilian, Portuguese is my native language, but I have also had excellent teachers 👩‍🏫 who inspired me to teach.
2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?
Emília, the iconic rag doll 🧵 from Sítio do Picapau Amarelo, is an emblematic figure of Brazilian culture. With her intelligence and boldness 💡, she represents the questioning and creative spirit of Brazil.
3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?
✨ "Bença, mainha/painho" is a traditional expression from Northeastern Brazil used to ask for parents' blessings, as a gesture of respect, affection, and protection.
4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?
Portuguese is a fundamental part of my identity. I not only share my native language but also my culture and the way I (we) see the world. 🤝
5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
Pronunciation, especially nasal sounds, is a challenge. Being in contact with music 🎵 and cinema 🎬 helps a lot.
6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
In high school, when I was studying Spanish, I confused "embarazada" 🤰 with "avergonzada" 🙈, which made me laugh a lot 😂.
7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
I ❤️ my language and my country! On a trip to the Brazilian Amazon 🌿, I had the opportunity to learn some expressions of Tupi origin that are part of the Portuguese spoken in Northern Brazil, such as "carapanã". It's fascinating to see how many sounds and words/languages intertwine, creating a Portuguese as vast as the continent. Portuguese always surprises me ✨!
8) What makes you a Superprof in language?
I wouldn't say I'm "super" 🦸‍♀️, but when I see my students smiling while speaking Portuguese 😄, it feels like a little superpower I've been given.
