About Nancy
My saxophone teaching philosophy emphasizes a holistic approach that combines technical rigor with fostering creativity and emotional connection to music. I begin by ensuring students build a solid foundation in breath control, embouchure, finger technique, articulation, and rhythm, as these skills are vital for producing a beautiful, controlled tone and for musical versatility. Intonation and dynamics are key focuses, helping students develop phrasing that conveys emotion and style. Improvisation is integral to lessons, introduced early to cultivate creativity and musical intuition. I guide students through scales, modes, and chord progressions in a way that relates directly to repertoire and improvisational exercises, making theory practical and engaging. Repertoire is selected collaboratively to reflect the student’s musical preferences—whether that be jazz standards, blues, pop tunes, or classical pieces—so lessons feel relevant and inspiring. I encourage students to set both short- and long-term goals to maintain focus and celebrate progress. The use of technology like play-along tracks, recordings, and tempo control tools supports effective practice habits and deeper self-awareness. A particularly rewarding experience was mentoring a student who initially struggled with embouchure fatigue and tone consistency but, through patient technical work and improvisation, blossomed into an accomplished soloist. My ultimate aim is to foster saxophonists who are not only technically skilled but also confident, creative, and deeply connected to the music they perform and create.

In teaching saxophone, I believe the key to success lies in nurturing both technical mastery and expressive freedom. My teaching philosophy centers on fostering a healthy, efficient approach to playing—focusing on breath control, embouchure, tone quality, and finger dexterity—while simultaneously encouraging students to discover and develop their unique musical voice.
I prioritize personalized lessons that adapt to each student’s learning style, goals, and musical preferences, which might include jazz, blues, classical, or pop. I integrate music theory and ear training organically into lessons to build a solid understanding of scales, chord progressions, and rhythm, helping students improvise confidently and compose creatively. Technology is a valuable ally; I employ recording devices, play-along tracks, metronomes, and tuning apps to provide immediate, tangible feedback and motivate consistent practice.
Performance is a cornerstone of my approach—I encourage regular recital participation, ensemble playing, and informal jams to build stage presence and confidence. A particularly rewarding experience was mentoring a student who struggled with stage fright; through gradual exposure and performance preparation, they not only overcame anxiety but also won praise for a heartfelt solo performance. My mission is to inspire lifelong musicianship by cultivating skills, passion, and self-expression, so that students leave lessons feeling confident, motivated, and creatively fulfilled.
