About Josephine

Hello! My name is Jo and I'm a cancer researcher and recent grad from the University of Calgary, graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Biological Sciences with distinction. I'll be relocating to Victoria, BC for a year before moving to Ontario!

I have 7+ years of experience in working with children and providing peer supported learning, 4+ years of experience in healthcare, 2+ years of experience in working with special needs children, and mentored 20+ students. My promise is to provide a safe, judgement free, and inclusive space to learn and grow. The success of my students is a priority and I will collaborate with the learner to bring out the best of their abilities and extend my utmost patience, kindness, and respect.

I have also mentored over 20 students, some of which have gone on to become club presidents with their University Student's Union club, and some who have gotten full-ride scholarships! My interests are in medical sciences, with a special focus on the development of new cancer therapeutics. I also provide mentorship to those who are seeking advice on secondary and post-secondary school, whether they don't know what they want to do yet, or if they have a path in mind! I have worked with many brilliant minds who have wanted to pursue something aside from medical sciences, and I've also worked with adults who have wanted to change their career path or get back on their feet after life gave them too many lemons! I'm very open to discussing how I can help you, so don't be afraid to reach out :) This is a safe and inclusive space where your confidentiality is respected.

About the lesson

I offer in-person and virtual INDIVIDUALLY TAILORED LESSONS for students ranging from:
- pre-school
- K-12
- post-secondary
- mature/upgrading students
- ESL students
- special needs students*

SUBJECTS:
- English (including ELA IB)
- General science
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Math (pre-school and K-6 only)
- Introduction to phonetics, reading, and writing for young children and beginner English speakers (ESL)
- UCalgary specific courses (BIOL 241, 243, 311; CMMB 343, 413, 421, 461-- inquire for courses not listed)
- University courses from other schools depend based on curriculum-- we can discuss at your complimentary consult!

I believe that the way that material is taught greatly affects the success of each student as every learner has a unique learning style that best suits their needs.

To ensure that I can teach in a way that supports each learner the best, prior to the first lesson, I will meet with the student (and parents if needed!) for a COMPLIMENTARY 20-MINUTE CONSULT to discuss learner goals, strengths, weaknesses, special accommodations, preferred materials and structure.

*for special needs students, please send me an inquiry detailing what you are looking for (e.g., lessons following provided curriculum, TACPAC, custom activities, etc.). Please note: I have experience working with children who have special needs to varying extents, including assisting a special needs teacher with class activities in a volunteer capacity, BUT please note that I do not have formal certification from a certified program. If your child has significant medical needs, caregiver supervision will be required at learning sessions.
