About Ellie

About Me

Hi! My name is Ellie, and I am a Grade 11 student with a strong passion for mathematics, academics, and helping others succeed. I have always enjoyed helping the people around me, and I frequently find myself being asked by friends and classmates for help with math and science. Seeing someone understand a concept that they were previously struggling with is one of the most rewarding parts of helping others.

I am currently taking Math 20-1 in Alberta's academic stream, after completing Math 10-1 as a prerequisite. Throughout my previous years of schooling, I have maintained an average of 95% or higher and have received academic honors from Grades 8–10. I am confident in mathematics through the Grade 10 level, but I have chosen to tutor students in Grades 1–9 because I believe strong mathematical foundations are incredibly important for success in high school.

What I believe sets me apart is that I don't think being good at math automatically makes someone a good tutor. A good tutor needs to understand both the subject and how their student learns. If a student tells me, “I don't understand this at all,” I don't simply repeat the same explanation. I first try to understand how they learn best and then adapt my explanation, whether that means using visual examples, breaking a problem into smaller steps, or approaching the concept from a completely different perspective.

As a high school student, I also have firsthand experience seeing the challenges that students face with mathematics. I understand how difficult it can be to keep up in a classroom when you don't have the opportunity for one-on-one support. My goal is to provide that individual attention while helping students strengthen the foundations they may be missing.

My friends would describe me as smart, considerate, thoughtful, dedicated, and hardworking, and I bring those qualities into my tutoring. I want every student to leave a lesson feeling more confident than when they arrived, knowing that they have the skills and understanding necessary to succeed in their classroom.

Ultimately, I don't just want to help students get through their next assignment or test. I want to help them build a strong mathematical foundation and develop the confidence to approach future problems independently.

My Approach As A Tutor
Every single person learns differently. My approach to teaching students math addresses this by making personalized, clear, and engaging lessons that not only give the steps for how to solve math questions, but rather build the foundations to understand the concepts and "why" their answers are correct and/or incorrect.

My Methodology
I use simple explanations, examples, guided practice, and sample questions to help students comprehend new topics, or to explain prior concepts that may not have a strong foundation. When students struggle on topics, I find that by breaking down the idea into smaller steps, using different examples, or explaining the topic in different ways allows for students to reinforce the basic foundations they may have been missing.

My Lesson Plans
While each lesson is personalized to each student's needs, the general structure remains consistent from one student to the next. To start off my lessons, a quick review of what my student already knows is conducted. From there, I can identify what the student may be struggling with, leading the session into reviewing or introducing the main concept they struggle with. After I teach the topic, I will clarify with my students to confirm they understand what I have taught by working through examples and practice problems. We work through practice problems and examples until the student is able to independently solve the questions presented and explain the topic in their own words. At the end of each session I do a quick review of the topic with my students to determine if more practice is needed. Students, and parents of students, are always able to reach out to me by email if there are any concerns or questions.

What Sets Me Apart
I aim to make math feel less like a chore, less intimidating, and less of a struggle. As a high school student, I can completely understand that when concepts are hard to grasp that it can cause undesired stress and create a lack of motivation to succeed. Therefore, when it comes to learning, I am patient, approachable, and willing to explain a concept in multiple ways so that my students can understand complex topic and feel confident while doing so.

Who My Lessons Are For
My tutoring is available for students in grades 1-9, with the primary focus being on students who lack the foundations of math. My lessons are designed to help students understand concepts, prepare for tests, improve their skills, and build confidence in a subject that is frequently stereotyped to be a struggle, hard, and sometimes frustrating. Lessons can also be used for students who want to strengthen their existing knowledge.
