About Nina
I am in my final year of a B.S. in mathematical sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. I was a teaching assistant for CMU's Introduction to Programming and Computer Science class, where I taught recitations (which are like small, interactive lectures), tutored individual students, graded assignments, and so on. During high school, I tutored children of various ages in reading and math, and spent a great deal of time babysitting. I'm comfortable with people of all ages, and I believe that everyone deserves to be taken seriously, no matter their experience.
I'm in San Francisco for the next three months or so, but I live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

I hope to help others see the beauty of math. I've always wished that proof-based math began earlier in standard curricula, because its late appearance gives people the false impression that math is about computation rather than about logic. I will teach people math with a focus on the logical/verbal aspect, in which we never simply assert something, but always make a thorough argument. I have also learned that visualization/physical analogy is key to true mathematical understanding and intuition (in most cases). Thus, I seek to combine these two elements (logical and visual) for *any* level of math.
We will work through problems together in a patient, deliberate, and creative way. I will give people time to practice and think about the material from many different angles. I won't focus on things like speed, memorization, or weird tricks, because I want you to really understand what we are talking about.
We can discuss what you have been learning in your classes, or I can teach you a standalone curriculum based around reputable, proof-based textbooks, and we can definitely do some combination of the two.
I can teach standard high school curriculum subjects like geometry, pre-calc, and calculus, as well as college-level subjects like linear algebra, multivariable calculus, intro to proofs, differential equations, real analysis, and many others.
