About Dorothy
I have a bachelors degree in physics and a masters degree in education. Throughout my college career I was a TA and tutor for multivariate calculus, linear algebra, introductory physics, and electronics. Post college I designed electronics projects and taught the public how to make them through the website Instructables. While returning to school for a Masters in education, I helped develop and teach makerspace classes and camps at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign for students in college, high school, and middle school. I also designed storyline science curriculum for middle schools. Today, I am a certified high school teacher working in Madison, WI.

I was trained in the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) and modeling and storyline pedagogy. NGSS emphasis three important pillars of science: scientific practices, disciplinary content, and crosscutting concepts. Too often we only emphasize content while letting the other two (which are necessary for success in science) fall to the wayside. Modeling and storyline curriculum focusing on students asking questions, which motivates the need to learn new material. They also emphasize the need for laboratory explorations, simulations, and data analysis. Finally, and perhaps more importantly for storylines, science learning must be authentic. It's so so important to connect content with real-life, puzzling phenomenon. Finally, it's important that you as the student know that you can be an active participant in science. That means I want my students to build, tinker, and practice!
