About Martha

My teaching philosophy centers around the belief that piano is more than just an instrument—it’s a medium for storytelling, emotional expression, and personal discovery. I work to create a lesson environment where students feel safe to explore both the technical and creative sides of music-making. Technical foundation is essential, so we focus carefully on posture, hand shape, finger strength, and articulation, ensuring that the body supports the sound in a sustainable way. We combine this with comprehensive musicianship skills—like sight-reading, ear training, and theory—that empower students to become independent, confident players. Yet technique is never the sole focus; I encourage students to interpret music by considering mood, character, and narrative, asking questions like “What story does this piece tell?” or “How can we make this phrase speak?” I often include improvisation and composition projects to expand their creative palette and deepen musical intuition. My students come with diverse goals—some prepare for exams, others for performance, and many simply want to play for their own pleasure—and I adapt my approach accordingly. A particularly rewarding experience was guiding a young adult through a series of original compositions, helping them refine their ideas and perform confidently in a local showcase. I also believe in cultivating reflective practice: students regularly evaluate their progress, set personalized goals, and develop practice strategies that maintain engagement and avoid burnout. I use a variety of tools, including technology for recording and slow practice, to provide immediate feedback and track improvement. Ultimately, my goal is to inspire a lifelong relationship with piano where technical mastery and emotional depth flourish side by side.

I believe that piano learning should be an inspiring and individualized journey where technical mastery meets artistic exploration, and every student’s unique musical voice is nurtured.

My teaching philosophy emphasizes establishing a strong technical foundation by focusing on posture, finger strength and dexterity, rhythmic accuracy, and sight-reading skills. However, these technical aspects are always linked to meaningful musical experiences—whether that’s playing classical pieces, jazz improvisations, pop songs, or student compositions—to keep lessons engaging and relevant.

I integrate music theory and ear training seamlessly, helping students understand the structure and language of music so they can play with deeper insight and creativity. Creativity is encouraged through improvisation and composition exercises, allowing students to develop confidence and personal expression alongside technical proficiency. I make use of modern technology, including recording tools, metronomes, and digital apps, to provide instant feedback and motivate students to practice effectively.

Above all, I strive to create a warm, supportive environment where students feel safe to make mistakes, take risks, and celebrate every achievement. Whether preparing for exams, performances, or playing for personal fulfillment, my goal is to help each student become a confident, expressive pianist who enjoys music as a lifelong passion.
