About Isla
I hold a Master’s degree in Cognitive Science and Chess Studies and have 7 years of experience teaching chess to students of all ages and levels. My teaching philosophy emphasizes critical thinking, strategic planning, and building confidence while fostering a positive and encouraging learning environment. I help students develop a strong foundation in chess fundamentals and cultivate a lifelong appreciation for the game.
Lessons are tailored to each learner. Beginners focus on rules, basic tactics, and simple endgames; intermediate learners refine strategy, calculation, and positional understanding; advanced students prepare for tournaments, advanced tactics, and psychological readiness. Each lesson includes exercises, guided practice, and constructive feedback for consistent improvement.
Outside teaching, I study chess theory, analyze top-level games, and participate in tournaments to enhance my expertise. Supporting students in developing strategic thinking, confidence, and enjoyment in chess remains the most rewarding part of my work.

My chess lessons focus on developing strategic thinking, tactical awareness, calculation skills, and decision-making under pressure. Students study opening principles, middlegame tactics, endgame strategies, and pattern recognition to enhance their overall game understanding. Lessons incorporate exercises, practice games, puzzles, and analysis of historical and contemporary games to build analytical skills, critical thinking, and confidence. I provide a supportive environment where learners are encouraged to experiment, reflect, and learn from both successes and mistakes.
Lessons are structured according to student level. Beginners focus on basic rules, opening principles, tactics, and simple endgames to establish a strong foundation. Intermediate learners study positional understanding, complex tactics, planning, and analysis of games. Advanced students focus on deep strategic planning, advanced endgames, tournament preparation, and psychological aspects of competitive play. Each session integrates guidance, practice, and review to ensure consistent improvement and game mastery.
The aim of my chess lessons is to help students think critically, make confident decisions, and enjoy the intellectual challenge of the game. Learners gain problem-solving skills, foresight, patience, and resilience. Lessons balance disciplined study with engaging, practical gameplay, creating a rewarding and stimulating learning experience.
