About Luke

Hello! My name is Luke, I am 36 years old and have been passionately teaching chess for over 10 years. Chess has been a major part of my life since childhood, and over the years it has grown from a hobby into something I genuinely love teaching to players of all ages.
I’m an active online player with a 2400 rating, which means I understand both the classical fundamentals of the game and the fast-paced, modern online chess environment. This experience helps me teach in a way that’s clear, practical, and always relevant to today’s style of play.
What I enjoy most is seeing students grow — whether it’s a young beginner learning the basics for the first time, or an adult improver finally breaking through a rating plateau. My teaching style is friendly, patient, and highly personalised. If you’re looking for structured guidance, a supportive coach, and a clear path to improvement, I’d love to help you take your chess to the next level.

Each session is a focused 60 minutes designed to maximise learning without overwhelming you. Lessons include interactive analysis, guided practice, and clear takeaways you can apply immediately in your games. Whether you’re a complete beginner, a young student developing critical-thinking skills, or an adult looking to sharpen your game, my sessions adapt to your level. Each lesson is practical, engaging, and built to help you understand why moves are strong — not just to memorise them. My goal is to make you a confident, independent player who improves both during lessons and between them.

  • 1) When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I started playing chess as a kid and was instantly hooked. The mix of strategy, competition, and “I can outsmart my older relatives” energy pulled me in early. Over time it evolved from a hobby into a skill, then into a passion, and eventually something I now teach.
  • 2) Which artists or works affect you the most?

For me, the greatest “artist” in chess is Paul Morphy — the ultimate example of principled, classical play. His games show the pure power of piece activity, development, and initiative. Even today, you can study a Morphy game and instantly understand what good, clean, attacking chess looks like.
  • 3) What qualities or skills are required to succeed in this area?

Patience, pattern recognition, disciplined thinking, and the ability to learn from mistakes without flipping the board. A sense of humour also helps — especially after blundering a queen.
  • 4) What is the most valuable advice to stay focused on creative projects?

Break big goals into small, winnable steps. Momentum beats intensity, you don’t need 3 perfect hours, just 15 consistent minutes. And if your brain gets stuck, step away, reset, and come back fresh.
  • 5) How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

Chess gives me a mix of calm and excitement. It’s mentally challenging, endlessly interesting, and incredibly satisfying when everything clicks - both in my own play and in my students’ progress.
  • 6) What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

Seeing students jump hundreds of rating points in short periods, helping adults rediscover a childhood passion, and teaching kids who go from “how does this horse move?” to beating their parents. Those moments feel like wins for us both.
  • 7) Have you ever been surprised by a student?

Absolutely. Some students pick up ideas unbelievably fast. I’ve seen players jump from beginner to genuinely competitive in weeks — often because they’re curious, consistent, and just need the right guidance.
  • 8) Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

Make learning fun, tailor teaching to each student, and celebrate progress at every step. Combine strong fundamentals with humour, encouragement, and clear explanations - and suddenly improvement becomes inevitable.
