About William

I am a Mandarin Chinese graduate with a strong academic background in language learning and communication. I also have experience working as a Teaching Assistant in a school setting, where I supported students of different ages and abilities across a range of subjects.
Alongside this, I spent time in Taiwan supporting young learners with their English development, which helped me develop a patient, adaptable, and encouraging teaching style. I understand the challenges of learning a new language and aim to make the process clear, structured, and enjoyable for every student.
I decided to teach because I enjoy helping others build confidence and achieve goals they may not have thought possible at first. I find it especially rewarding to see students make progress and start using Mandarin in real, meaningful ways.
I also think Mandarin is a fascinating but challenging language to learn, and I enjoy seeing more people take on that challenge and engage with it. It’s a language that opens the door to a rich culture and new ways of thinking, and I enjoy helping students discover that.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy staying active and following sport, especially football and the NFL. I also have a strong interest in East Asian languages and culture, which continues to shape my passion for teaching Mandarin.
My goal is to create a supportive environment where students feel confident, motivated, and able to make real progress in Mandarin.

I take a supportive and structured approach to teaching Mandarin, focusing on helping students build confidence in speaking and understanding the language in real-life situations. My lessons are tailored to each student’s goals, whether that is improving conversation, building vocabulary, or strengthening grammar and pronunciation.
I use a mix of conversational practice, guided speaking exercises, and interactive materials to keep lessons engaging and practical. I aim to create a relaxed environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and learning from them, as this is an essential part of language development.
A typical lesson lasts 50 minutes, giving enough time to review key points, introduce new material, and practise actively through speaking and exercises.
I hold a degree in Mandarin Chinese and have experience as a Teaching Assistant in a school setting, as well as supporting learners during my time in Taiwan. This has given me a strong understanding of both language learning and how to adapt teaching to different needs and learning styles.
My lessons are aimed mainly at beginners and intermediate learners of Mandarin, including teenagers and adults who want to build a solid foundation or improve their confidence in using the language.
