About Arundhathi

I was trained in Classical singing (Carnatic music) from a young age, and it has been a transformative part of my life.

To me, singing is a form of self-expression—something deeply personal and unique to each individual. There is no price or limit to what you can express through your voice. Your singing and speaking are entirely your own and should never be constrained by external pressures.

I believe that relaxation and self-acceptance are vital to singing, as are self-respect and fearlessness. It’s important to separate the act of singing from the idea of “performing for an audience” or doing so at someone else’s behest. Singing, at its core, should be a pure expression of who you are.

About the lesson

I teach Carnatic singing from the very basics and explore music theory with my students, while also offering guidance in Western singing. My approach focuses on self-expressive, effortless singing, helping you develop versatility across genres and traditions.

In class, we’ll work on relaxing your voice, using visualization techniques to calm yourself, and learning how to breathe fully for powerful and controlled singing. We’ll explore how self-esteem and self-respect are essential to expressing yourself, and how emotions are conveyed through your voice—whether in a Carnatic kriti, a film song, or a Western ballad.

You’ll also learn how to keep your voice in shape through oral hygiene, vocal exercises, and diet, before diving into music theory and vocal practice.

For Carnatic singing, we’ll cover the basics of music theory at a steady, enjoyable pace, with plenty of relatable examples—like identifying ragas in film songs and translating popular music into Carnatic swaras. For Western singing, we’ll explore techniques like voice modulation, resonance, and interpretation, helping you sing across styles and genres with confidence.

My aim is to help you find your unique voice, whether you're drawn to Carnatic music, Western traditions, or both. At the end of every class, I’ll ask for your feedback to ensure the lessons are tailored to your learning style and goals. My hope is to be a compassionate and gentle teacher throughout our journey together.
