About Derika

Hello! My name is Derika Moore, and I am currently a college student majoring in Dental Hygiene. I'm passionate about helping others understand and develop confidence in their problem-solving skills. As someone who has learned and applied math concepts from childhood to college, I definitely can relate to how challenging math can be, and yet, how rewarding it feels when concepts make sense. My goal is to make the subject of math more approachable by breaking down complex ideas into simple, clear steps and explaining in a way that fits your learning style. Even though I am still in college, I take tutoring seriously and approach every session with patience, preparation, professionalism, and most importantly, with positive energy. I strive to create a friendly, encouraging environment where you can ask questions freely and build confidence in your abilities. I look forward to helping and bringing a positive learning environment for ages 5 to 14. Whether you are reviewing algebra, strengthening your basic math skills, or just beginning your math journey, I am here to help you reach your goals at a comfortable pace.

About the lesson

My teaching method and techniques involves using small presentations to engage students and visually represent the concept for them to understand more, adapting to different learning styles to help them grow and cater to their needs, and with the usage of games and activities to make learning fun and allow them the opportunity to demonstrate what they learn. A typical lesson plan includes warm-ups such as reviewing prior lessons or play games to get them ready to learn using Kahoot or Quizzes, following up with using my whiteboard to show algebra and basic math (arithmetic) using real world equations. Afterwards play a video that connects to the lesson. Then allow them a 5-to-10-minute break and play music in the background to reset their mind to be able to attain more information. At the end, initiate a review game that will help them show what they learned and for them to practice more and end the session with a positive affirmation and encouragement. What sets me apart as a tutor for math is being open to all learning styles and being able to incorporate diverse needs in lessons that will support them to success and for personal growth and play classical music softly that can enhance brain activity and focus subconsciously while adding fun and interactive activities. The lessons are for grades preschool to middle school (ages 5 to 14).
