About Yong
Chess has been part of my life for a long time, and teaching it well is something I genuinely care about. My current strength is roughly 1750 to 1850 FIDE and 2200 to 2400 on Chess.com, so the guidance I give is solid and reliable. Away from the board I am calm, friendly and easy to talk to, and I keep sessions feeling relaxed rather than intimidating. I also have a soft spot for fast, aggressive play, so blitz and bullet are a happy speciality of mine.

My lessons are built entirely around you. In the first session we play a game or look through your recent games together, so I can see how you think and where the easy points are being lost. From there we agree a simple plan and work through it step by step.
Every lesson mixes clear explanation with plenty of active practice. Rather than just memorising moves, we focus on understanding: why a move works, what to look for in a position, and how to make good decisions when it is your turn. We cover openings, tactics, endgames and positional play, and I set small, focused exercises between lessons so progress carries over.
Lessons are one to one and online, using a shared board so we can play through positions and puzzles together in real time. A typical lesson is 60 minutes, though 45 or 90 minutes work well too, and I am happy to adjust the pace and length for younger players.
As for me, I study at Imperial College London and play competitively in rated tournaments, so lessons are grounded in real personal experience, not just theory. I also tutor academically, so I am used to explaining tricky ideas patiently and clearly, and building a lesson around what each student actually needs.
My lessons suit all ages and levels. Complete beginners and juniors learning the rules, adult improvers who want to finally get better, and club players preparing for tournaments are all welcome. Whatever your goal, whether it is having fun, beating a friend, or climbing the rating ladder, we will build a plan to get you there.
