About Raphael

I'm an avid lover of music and have spent years studying and working with various genres of music. I would love to teach you what you need to get you going for whatever contemporary scenario you are looking at be it; Playing keyboard for church, your song creations, music production, for events... No more guessing!

I'm also a Music producer of more than 7 years, with over 10 years of experience on the keyboard, guitar and piano itself.

About the lesson

My teaching method is student- based and my lessons are based on making the student understand the indepthness of the topic to be taught. I teach in the most basic way ever and I'm sure you are bound to understand very quickly.

We would be covering these topics;

1. Foundations & Setup

- Keyboard layout: notes, octaves, black/white keys - Hand posture, finger numbering, and ergonomics - Understanding middle C and orientation on the keyboard.

2. Basic Music Concepts

- Intervals (half-step, whole-step) - Scales: major, minor, pentatonic - Chords: triads, 7th chords, basic chord progressions (I–V–vi–IV, ii–V–I).

3. Rhythm & Playing Styles

- Reading basic rhythms - Playing with a metronome / drum loop - Contemporary comping patterns (pop, rock, R&B, gospel, jazz) - Left-hand techniques: bass notes, octaves, rhythmic patterns.

4. Playing with Chords & Progressions

- Chord inversions and smooth transitions - Playing chord progressions in different keys - Using chord charts / lead sheets (instead of full sheet music).

5. Improvisation & Creativity

- Melodic improvisation with scales - Creating fills and runs - Adding dynamics and expression.

6. Contemporary Applications

- Playing along with backing tracks - Using sustain pedal and effects - Exploring different sounds/patches on a digital keyboard (pads, electric piano, synths) - Accompanying singers or other instruments.

7. Repertoire & Performance

- Learning popular songs (chord-based) - Playing by ear - Performance skills: confidence, stage presence, transitions.

The first meet was good, after the introduction we went over any previous knowledge, and I then explained how the class would be structured and the different topics we would cover. Overall good start.

Raphael's teaching style is such a nice balance of structure and flexibility, you learn proper technique but he also lets you explore the kind of music you love. Every lesson feels really engaging, and I always come away with something new to practice that ACTUALLY feels doable for me.
