About Shiitaal

A creative writing coach whose short stories, poetry and non fiction pieces have been published in print and online. B.A (Hons) in English Literature from JMC followed by an MBA. Recently, as in, in the last four years I have completed a course in Creative Writing from SACAC (Sri Aurobindo Centre for Arts & Communication). The CW course at SACAC is considered to be one of the best courses in creative writing in the country. My first few articles got published in Swagath, the Indian Airliens magazine way back in 1999. Another one in Inside Outside, the only magazine worth its salt in the realm of interiors way back in 1999. After that, I blogged for NDTV goodtimes.com for a bit. Off late my pieces of non fiction, fiction and poetry has been published in literary journals like Muse India, Spark the magazine and the IIAD BLOG. For the last several years I am coaching students in creative writing, imparting ideas and techniques to enable them to think on their feet and come up with ideas to write on any topic under the sun. I teach tools and methods to enhance their written and verbal expression so that it is more effective and creates an impact. I employ techniques that I have developed to enhance their vocabulary and up their writing game by at least 50 notches. A chess grand master is not born in a single day. Plus, however talented the child may be in terms of playing chess, he needs a coach; someone who's been there, done that! Similarly it is with writing - if you get a good mentor and you are consistent in doing what the coach tells you to do, you can enhance your writing skills with time.

In the first class, I usually try to gauge the strengths and weaknesses of the student. I then devise lessons before each class and strive to make the class engaging and something that brings value addition to the student. My approach is holistic - I focus on all areas of writing; I shall be giving prompts and writing exercises, building on his/her vocabulary base and have several other interesting techniques such that the student becomes a lot more expressive and vocal about the ideas in his head. He/she is also taught to communicate more effectively. I keep the lessons fun and interactive.

  • Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

I always had a flair for writing since school. I have written articles that have been published in print journals offline and in literary journals online. I enjoy penning down poetry. I get bursts of inspiration when I start punching my thoughts and words flow unbidden. Once a friend of mine asked me to teach her son how to write. One student led to another and things unfolded quite organically. I observed that I enjoyed coaching young minds in the creative writing process. I decided to marry my two loves of writing and coaching students and became a creative writing teacher.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

I discovered that I have a passion for teaching students and people who want to study creative writing. When they would come back and tell me that they had made tremendous progress in their writing skills under my mentoring, it gave me a huge high and inspired me to take it up as a profession.
  • How does your work help society?

The most important currency in today's day is attention. If a student can hold your attention for even 5 minutes with his / her communication skills, you would be willing to put your money on him/her. For being articulate and having immaculate communication skills, you need to be able to form the ideas in your head first. Hence, you need to be able to put ideas and thoughts on paper and think on your feet. Creative writing has become a life skill in today's age and date and I'm grateful to have gotten the opportunity to train students in this field.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

I'm inspired by Bill Gates who has been working tirelessly and non stop for the past several decades. His level of commitment and persistence towards his work is of another level altogether. He walks the talk.
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

I am a person who dons several hats. I enjoy interior styling, photography and writing poetry whenever I'm inspired. I am a nature person - I like strolling in the parks close to my house to be able to unwind and watch my thoughts till the time my mind becomes quiet. Stillness is important to me.
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

Once I was in a vocab session with one of my students from Pune. I was teaching him new and interesting words and giving examples of sentences for each word and then asking him to give his own examples. He was getting stuck at some moments. Once he gave a very good example straight off the bat.

So I remarked in the lighter vein, "DKQ!"

He was inquisitive, "Mam what is DKQ"

"Dil Khush Quita," pat came my reply.

Chuckles and grins that established a bond between us.

Then it became a big joke between us. Whenever I would teach him a relatively easy word or give him a simple task to do, he would go, "DKQ!"

I love the effervescence and exuberance of these young students - they teach me how to be in the present moment. Spending time with them is simply priceless.
