About Kate

I am a credentialed teacher with 5 years of public school teaching experience, and am passionate about helping students cover learning gaps by focusing on the foundational skills they need in order to achieve at their current grade level. I learned Spanish during my 5 years in the classroom and have successfully taught math and reading foundational skills in Spanish and in English. For a math example, I can work with your student 1:1 on math fact fluency (multiplication/division) in order for them to be able to multiply and divide fractions starting in 4/5th grade. Or, for reading, I can help your student boost phonemic awareness and morphology skills in order to help them read and comprehend grade-level texts. I have successfully helped 5th, 6th, and 8th grade students who were sometimes two, three, or four grade levels behind gain fluency in foundational math and reading skills--thus building their confidence in mastering grade-level content. If you're the parent or caretaker of a frustrated student in the elementary and middle school years, I may be the perfect person to help boost your student's foundational skills and confidence in learning!

I like to work with engaging, often game-based ways to target learning gaps with your student--specifically in foundational math and reading skills. For example, I use cards, dice, "counters" (any multi-unit household object--beans, pennies, rocks, etc.) to play competitive math games with students to expand their thinking about numbers (this is often referred to as "number sense") so that practicing multiplying and dividing will not only make sense to them in the real world, but that they will gain the automatic knowledge (fluency) to be able to apply that math to the more challenging concepts they will be introduced to later in school (i.e. multiplying and dividing decimals in 5th grade). If I will be helping your student with homework, I like to take one or two basic examples from their assigned homework and address the foundational skills within the problems, teach and reteach in different ways when necessary, then coach them through the more challenging examples once they have mastered the basics--all while showing them how to think about the math in a strategy (game)-based way. If reading fluency and comprehension is more of what your student is having trouble with, I like to address this with research-backed phonics basics first through engaging verbal, written, and listening phonics games, then progressing to morphology (prefixes, suffixes, and roots) based on your child's readiness and grade level. These exercises are universal, don't require extra equipment other than what your child likely already has from school, and can be taught in ways that are actually fun for them to learn. These examples of reading and math fluency exercises are just a few among the dozens of strategies I used each day during my years in the classroom. I have seen the real-time results from these simple learning games, and I would love the opportunity to use these activities to help your child actually enjoy school and feel confident in learning new things!
