My teaching method is to try and understand the student's confusion on a concept, first. Once I identify the source of confusion, I help them build up conceptual understanding before applying it to a problem.
A few teaching techniques I use include; asking questions to check for understanding, visuals, and breaks for the student to get a snack, etc.
My typical lesson plan looks like this:
Introduction (5 minutes): Time to just chat and get to know each other
Topic of focus (5 minutes): Student tells me what they are struggling to understand.
Conceptual breakdown (15 minutes): I will break down the concept(s) for the student with simple examples (I will use the zoom whiteboard feature or whatever the student prefers)
Break (5 minutes)
Application (5 minutes):
The student and I will apply the concept to a problem and walk through it.
Application (5 minutes): The student will try a problem on their own and then we will go through it together
Clear up any confusion (15 minutes):
Time for the student to ask questions and go through anything they struggled with during the application section.
One thing that sets me apart as a tutor is that I truly care about my student's learning. I want my students to succeed and nothing makes me happier than watching a student have that "aha" moment.
