About Jonathan

I'm a professional learning experience designer and former software developer with over ten years of experience teaching adults, including many career changers moving into tech. I currently work as a subject matter expert on a live web development certification program, where I write and review the training content real students use, and I've earned certifications recognizing my work as an educator. I'm also completing a graduate degree in Learning Design and Technology, which keeps my teaching grounded in current, evidence-based methods rather than guesswork.

Before moving into learning design, I worked professionally as a developer building real production software, so what I teach reflects how these skills are actually used on the job, not just theory. I've mentored learners through employer-sponsored programs with major companies including Amazon and Target, reviewed code and coursework for adult learners across multiple platforms, and consistently helped students who felt behind catch up and succeed.

My Teaching Method

I start every session by finding out where a student actually is, not where I assume they should be based on a class they've taken. Many students have completed a course but still feel shaky on the fundamentals, so I ask them to show me what they have and where it breaks before I explain anything. That usually reveals the real gap is narrower, and different, than what the student expects, so we spend time on what actually matters instead of material they already understand.

A Typical Lesson

A session starts with a short check-in on what's been confusing in recent coursework or homework, then moves into hands-on work. We open the actual code or problem together, and I ask guiding questions rather than just supplying answers, so the student builds the skill of debugging and reasoning through problems themselves, not just copying a fix. I like to end each lesson by identifying one or two specific things to practice before we meet again, so progress builds between sessions instead of starting over every time.

What Sets Me Apart

I've spent over ten years teaching adult learners, many of them career changers, alongside real professional experience building software and designing technical training programs. That combination means I can explain a concept from the theory side and from the "how it's actually used on the job" side, which is often what makes it finally click. I'm also genuinely patient. I don't assume prior knowledge just because a class was taken, and I'd rather slow down and rebuild a shaky foundation properly than rush ahead and leave gaps that cause problems later.

Who My Lessons Are For

I work well with beginners, career changers, and students who've had frustrating experiences with teaching before and need someone willing to actually start from the fundamentals. I teach Python and JavaScript, including foundational programming concepts, web development, and object-oriented programming, and I'm comfortable supporting homework, exam preparation, and project-based coursework, not just traditional lecture-style lessons.
