About Douglas
I am a dedicated mathematics tutor and first-year engineering student with a strong academic background in advanced mathematics. I achieved Excellence in all NCEA Level 2 and Level 3 Calculus externals and have several years of experience helping students improve their understanding and confidence in mathematics.
I currently tutor students aged 11–18, supporting them with topics ranging from fundamental numeracy to advanced calculus. My teaching approach focuses on building strong conceptual understanding rather than simple memorization, allowing students to develop problem-solving skills and long-term confidence in mathematics.
Many of the students I work with have significantly improved their grades and mathematical ability through structured guidance, targeted practice, and personalized explanations. I am committed to creating a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and developing their skills.
Whether you are preparing for exams, catching up on difficult topics, or aiming to achieve top grades, I am here to help you reach your academic goals.

METHOD OF TEACHING:
For primary school kids, I will first focus on addition and subtraction and then focus on times table and division so that they will be able to master all 4 operations before reaching intermediate. (They are also expected to deal with big numbers as well such as 415 times 133 and 17242 divided by 233 as well as all operations of fractions and decimals as well as some word problems in daily life). They will also be able to learn how to find the perimeter, area, and volume of a given object/shape.
For intermediate students, I will test them to identify their strengths and weaknesses and I will start teaching from their weaknesses in order to keep on track with my teaching schedule. For good progressing students, I will start introducing them to positive and negative numbers and bring them to all 4 operations of numbers, fractions, and decimals which aims in building their confidence in dealing with complicated numbers. Afterwards, they will learn algebra skills such as solving equations (up to 3 by 3 simultaneous equations), expanding, factorizing and simplifying expressions, identities, and power/exponential rules which are NCEA level 1 to level 2 algebra-related topics.
For high school students, I will test them and see their capabilities and start teaching them from what they are bad at. And once they have mastered these skills from intermediate, they will start learning quadratic equations and their properties, equations of straight lines, Pythagoras theorems and their applications, special angles of triangles and trigonometric functions, more on exponential rules including surds and log functions. These topics are all NCEA level 1 and level 2 algebra-related topics. Once they are progressing well, I will start going over level 3 complex numbers standards which are fully related to level 1 and 2 algebra standards. Then I will start teaching them Calculus which is related to NCEA level 2 calculus and level 3 differentiation and integration standards. (Note that I won't teach these standards separately since these standards are closely related)
1. It is expected that students should be able to finish homework on time to ensure they won't forget what they have learned during class. I won't assign too much homework for them but the workload will be increased as they start learning new topics.
2. My goal of teaching is to ensure my students can not only understand the school materials but also allow them to advance their year level (or do advanced math) to build confidence and excel in their academic pursuits.
LESSON ARRANGEMENT: 1 hour, either 1 on 1 or in groups.
QUALIFICATIONS: NCEA LEVEL 3 EXCELLENT ENDORSEMENT (2025), NCEA LEVEL 3 CALCULUS EXCELLENT ENDORSED (2024)
EXPERIENCE: 2 years and 8 months of home tutoring with students ranging from 6-18. And most of them were able to advance their school year. Also, I have been teaching in KUMON for more than 1 year which aims in teaching students to master advanced math skills at their young age.
AGE: from primary school to high school.
