About Laurence
I am an enthusiastic history teacher with five years of positive results and a 100% pass rate.
I aim to approach history in an engaging, entertaining and engaging way to instil passion, interest and curiosity in my learners. I teach using a holistic method to make the lesson content relevant and memorable to young minds, whilst promoting responsibility and civic duty in my students.
I specialise in Modern History with a particular interest in political, military and imperial history.
A lifelong avid historian, I knew I wanted to study history from an early age. After school, college and year travelling in Africa, I completed my BA (Hons) History at Sheffield Hallam University where I received a 2.1, specialising in military and imperial history, writing my dissertation on the Mau Mau insurgency in Kenya. Following this, I completed an MA in Modern History at the University of Sheffield, focusing on American history, with my dissertation investigating the link between the American civil war and the passing of the 1867 Reform Act.
After university, I worked in learning support, giving me experience working with a students of a range of abilities and backgrounds.
I completed a PGCE in 2019 and QTLS in 2020. I went on to teach History in a number of positions in colleges in the North of England, as well as other subjects including, Politics and Criminology. I have taught classes in a ranges of sizes on topics including: Weimar and Nazi Germany 1918-1945, Tudor England 1485-1603, The Cold War 1945-1991 and Tsarist and Communist Russia 1825–1939.
In addition to being a teacher, I am an army reservist with 8 years service. In addition to commitment and diligence, this has given me a strong sense of civic duty and responsibility, encouraging my mission to provide a holistic education with the aim to make my students competent, confident and conscientious. In this role I have given a number of well received battlefield and historical lectures, including The 2nd Anglo-Boer War, 2nd Battle of El Alamein, The Korean War, and the ongoing Russian Invasion of Ukraine.
