About Eleanor

I am an experienced teacher and tutor with a strong passion for helping students discover what they are capable of. I graduated from the University of Exeter with a BA and MA in Classics and completed my PGCE at the University of Cambridge. I have three years of teaching experience, alongside previous experience as a teaching assistant and private tutor.

What I enjoyed most about teaching was providing one-to-one clinics and seeing students steadily, and often much more quickly, improve when they received focused support tailored to their individual needs. One of the most rewarding moments was seeing that point where something finally clicked for a student — when a concept or a skill that had previously seemed difficult suddenly became clear and they realised they were capable of doing it themselves.

I believe strongly in academic rigour and encouraging every student to reach their full potential. At the same time, I recognise that students learn most effectively when they receive personalised feedback that identifies exactly what they are doing well and, importantly, what they can do to improve. I therefore make detailed, constructive feedback an important part of my teaching.

I also believe that regular exam practice is essential. Understanding the content is only part of succeeding in an examination; students need to become confident applying their knowledge under exam conditions and learn how to structure precise, well-developed answers. I combine teaching and discussion with guided practice, targeted questioning and exam-style tasks so that students can build both their knowledge and their confidence.

I enjoy teaching because it is incredibly rewarding to see students develop not only academically but also in their confidence and independence. My aim is to provide supportive, challenging and personalised tuition that helps each student make meaningful progress and achieve their full potential.

About the lesson

My Latin lessons are tailored to each student's level and aims, whether they are learning the language from scratch, consolidating their knowledge or preparing for GCSE or A-level examinations.

For language learning, I combine the rigour of a traditional grammar-and-translation approach with the accessibility and enjoyment of reading-based courses such as the Cambridge Latin Course. I believe that students need secure knowledge of the fundamental grammar, vocabulary and syntax of Latin, but that this should be balanced with plenty of opportunities to read and engage with Latin texts through such texts the culture and history linked with the language. Regular practice allows students to develop the confidence to approach unfamiliar passages independently.

Lessons can include focused grammar teaching, vocabulary development, translation, reading practice and targeted questioning, with detailed feedback to identify and address areas that need further consolidation.

For Latin literature, I use a similar approach to my English tuition, combining close analysis with discussion and plenty of opportunities for students to develop their own interpretations. We can read through the prescribed text together, examining its language, structure and literary techniques while exploring the nuances of the passage through targeted questioning and plenty of guided essay planning and exam style practice questions with personalised feedback. I aim not only to develop sophisticated analytical and essay-writing skills, but also to encourage students' curiosity and enthusiasm for the literature.

I am familiar with both main examination boards for Latin - Eduqas and OCR. I can provide targeted examination preparation, focusing on weaker areas and exam technique, or create a structured scheme of work for students who want to learn Latin systematically from the beginning.
