Who I Am and Why I Want to Teach

I am someone who has an innate passion for learning and a genuine love for the intellectual challenge that comes with problem-solving and mathematics. I firmly believe that confidence in mathematics can be achieved by any learner, regardless of their prior results and attainment.

A central reason I love teaching mathematics is that it equips learners with the critical tools needed to make better decisions—both within the subject and across their everyday lives—ultimately helping them become more capable, independent learners. Mathematics is a foundational discipline, and performance in it has a far-reaching impact on a student’s overall academic attainment.

In terms of my pedagogical nature and approach:

- Inquisitive Learning: I have always believed that we learn best by asking questions and understanding why a mathematical concept works or does not work, rather than simply memorising and applying a rote method.

- Approachability & Adaptability: One of my key strengths as an educator is my approachability. I am fully prepared to go out of my way to try a diverse range of methods, explanations, and analogies to ensure a student truly grasps a difficult topic.

- Stretching Potential: Once a core concept is mastered, I focus on finding creative ways to stretch learners, deepening their understanding and pushing them to exceed their target grades.

Expert Mathematics Tutor: KS3, GCSE, and A-Level Specialist

I am a fully qualified Mathematics teacher with over 15 years of experience teaching in high-performing and outstanding schools across the UK. I hold a BSc in Mathematics (2:1) and completed my PGCE at the Institute of Education (UCL IOE), one of the world’s leading institutions for teacher training. Having taught in an outstanding central London school and currently serving as a Key Stage 3 Mathematics Coordinator at a high-performing secondary school in Hertfordshire, I have a proven track record of securing year-on-year improvements in student attainment.

- Key Stage 3
- GCSE: Higher and Foundation Tiers
- A-Level / Key Stage 5 – Mathematics and Further Mathematics - IB Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches/ Applications and Interpretations

Qualifications & Examining Experience

In addition to my extensive classroom leadership, I have spent a decade working as a Pearson Edexcel GCSE Examiner, marking both Foundation and Higher tiers. This insider experience gives me a distinct advantage in teaching, providing students with critical insight into how marks are awarded and the precise techniques required to maximise their exam performance.

Techniques and Teaching Methodology

My tutoring approach prioritises getting students actively engaged in mathematical problem-solving. Through carefully selected questions, I encourage them to demonstrate their understanding, ask questions freely, and develop strong independent thinking. While they work, I provide live, tailored feedback to strengthen their grasp of core concepts, refine exam technique, and build lasting confidence.

Typical Length of a Lesson: Standard sessions are 1-2 hours, providing an optimal balance for reviewing independent practice, mastering new concepts, and tackling exam-style questions. Longer sessions are also available for advanced A-Level revision.
