About Joshua

Hello, my name is Josh and I am from Liverpool, England - a city you may know from Liverpool football club or maybe The Beatles (Or maybe not at all!). I am currently based in Liverpool whilst I further my education in English language with a Masters course in Applied Linguistics. Outside of studying I have a genuine interest for language, not just English, and often find myself in deep rabbit holes of unnecessary language history or etymology. Outside of that I really love music and use playing guitar as a relaxation method, as well as a creative tool. I also love to be active by playing golf, football, cycling, walking, going to the gym to balance out my time in passivity.

I am a very relaxed and easy going, always ready to talk about something new or learn from the experience of others. I aim to use my own experience of being a teacher and love of language to help you as much as I possibly can.

About the lesson

I am a TEFL qualified teacher with 7 years of experience. As stated before, I am also studying a Masters in Applied Linguistics, something which is directly applicable to this platform. I have taught all ages and levels - from 4 years old to adults, and from A1 to C2 (According to CEFR levels). Personally I work better with students that are 16+ / B1+ because I enjoy going into the details of language and using my skills gained at university to their fullest potential.

In terms of methodology, I take a humanist approach to language learning. No learner is the same in their approach, motivation or desire and so I approach each class organically with the needs of the student being my main concern. This is a lot easier to accomplish in a 1-on-1 session. It allows me to really get to know my students and help them in a way specific to their wants and needs. Of course, I do use theoretical principles to guide my planning, but I am aware that not every class, student and day are the same.

When you book a trial lesson with me, firstly we will just get to know one another without any formalities or testing. After this we can discuss what you would like to achieve within a set timeframe and I will give you my opinion on how we should proceed. We can discuss learning styles - from light and conversational to specific and theoretical (If you would like English lessons that focus on academia or a specific purpose, for example), or somewhere in between. I can also give and mark homework if this is desired or offer suggestions on how you can improve between lessons.

Typical lessons last 1 hour (Plus any extra time for questions), but some students have requested 90 minute or 120 minute sessions in the past.
