About Thom
I am an award winning photographer with 20 years of experience in the London photography industry, shooting in editorial, design and advertising fields. I am represented in London by a commercial agent, Gill Turner.
I have a BA (hons) in Photography and an MA in Photography and the Land, where I studied under Jem Southam, David Chandler and Liz Wells. I assisted photographers including John Spinks, Emma Hardy, Steve Harries, Broomberg and Chanarin, and Jo Metson Scott. Though I specialise in naturalistic portraiture, still life and landscape, I have extensive and current experience in many areas of photography. In addition to shooting I have professional experience in retouching and video work. I am also a practicing fine artist and published book maker. I have worked for many years in education as an associate lecturer and tutor on several highly rated BA Photography courses.
I've always enjoyed tutoring students and I've experienced the photography industry both as an apprentice and, later, as a professional. As the industry has changed and university education has become harder to afford, I feel the importance of tutoring and mentoring has grown enormously. As a student, an assistant and a photographer I have had some wonderful and inspiring teachers and mentors; I would like to offer some of the experience and understanding I have gathered back to the photography community. I am also interested in bringing a less corporate, institutionalised approach to teaching, and getting back to a more traditional, natural and meaningful teaching relationship.

I teach in a casual, conversational way, tailoring discussion, advice and learning to suit each students' aims and objectives. My approach is to tutor and mentor, rather than lecture. My sessions are primarily based online but some face to face sessions may be worthwhile depending on what you need.
My sessions last for 1 hour. Our first session will establish your interests and objectives, with subsequent sessions working towards those goals. I offer options to tailor a bespoke course of multiple sessions or I can be available on a one-off basis to work on specific questions and explorations.
My sessions are targeted at anybody starting out in the photography industry or looking to make the next step in their photographic career. My tutoring can be equally useful to students, graduates, or those looking to side-step the university approach to photography entirely, as well as assistants or photographers looking to further their careers. I’m also able to tutor more experienced photographers and artists with their personal projects. Sessions can cover topics including:
