About Rachael

I have been formally trained on tutoring techniques since July 2017, as I was employed by a maths and English tuition company - many tuition techniques I learnt there are ones I use today.

In my undergraduate studies I achieved a 2:1 grade on a module titled "Reflections in Teaching and Learning Practice" which provided me with invaluable knowledge on the theory behind teaching. I wrote my examination essay on how Special Educational Needs students are often overlooked in education (and tuition) and how best to combat this and the ways teaching can adapt to suit those who have additional needs.

As a freelance tutor I briefly tutored 2 children aged 7 and 9 on their times tables - although not necessarily related to the social sciences, those children were very disengaged with their subject at first. Shortly after I had been tutoring them they were incredibly excited for their lessons and showed me their improved test scores in school every week.

I am, above all else, a kind and encouraging teacher. I am a walking ray of sunshine and will always strive to make people achieve what they want.

About the lesson

I am a patient tutor whose lessons are geared to those who may be finding it difficulty to read research papers and write essays specifically, however I am flexible to any needs a student may want to address in sociology. I am especially good at being able to simplify complex terms to help someone understand and I excel at association to memorise key words and concepts.

My lesson structure is highly individual - if someone feels they learn better through discussions, that is how my lessons for them will be structured. I am very adaptable and I am able to provide a wide array of learning materials and methods, such as simply reading papers together, seminar-like discussions, and occasional pop-quizzes on key words, names and dates.

I am absolutely enthralled by the social sciences and I believe it is this love for the subject which has given me good results - I try and emulate this for all students, and I want them to be as passionate as I am. I make lessons engaging and interesting, especially when dealing with complicated theories and ideas.

I am an advocate of engagement leading to results and it is this engagement that I hope to crack, as if a student actually enjoys what they are learning about they are more likely to do well.

Details

My rates are £15/hour for GCSE and A-Level students, and £20 per hour for university students.

I do understand that there is often a class and income barrier to education and I am always happy to be flexible on my rates to students who need it, however this will be discussed on a by-case basis. Please do not hesitate to contact me and we are likely to be able to work something out.

If you are further than 30 minute walking distance from Cardiff University, I may charge travel expense, however this will simply be the cost of my bus ticket. I always aim to keep my prices fair.
