About Timothy

Before starting a new career (just recently) as a psychotherapist, I was a college professor (in Philosophy) and College Entrance Exam tutor with a leading tutoring company in New York City. My area of expertise is the verbal sections of SAT and ACT. It is possible to raise your ACT verbal score from 21 to 30, or 30 to 35; or to raise your SAT verbal score by 100+ points. I've seen it done countless times! My teaching focuses on key grammar rules and how to apply them on the test, common "answer traps," and speed building (which is particularly important on the ACT!). I also provide tutoring services for students who need help with French and Spanish homework, as well writing help with English and History Essays. Let's make sure you get an A on that writing assignment! Or at the very least a B+ :)

I have been teaching and tutoring for ten years. I love that moment in a tutoring program when things start to click for the student, they begin to pick up momentum, and their scores start shooting up. Nothing is more satisfying then seeing a student's score rise and their chances of getting into the school of their dreams increase!

I have 10+ years in teaching and tutoring. I tutored throughout college at both the high school and college level, including foreign languages, math, and science. After grad school, I taught philosophy at the college level for several years, while tutoring in ACT/SAT Verbal, and French and Spanish, on the side. I am now a psychotherapist in training, and I do tutoring on the weekends while I develop my new career. As an experienced teacher and early-career therapist, I am very patient with struggling students, and I understand the stress and anxiety that can come along with studying college entrance and course exams.

About the lesson

ACT/SAT Students: We begin with a "diagnostic" test. This just means that you take the verbal sections of the test (timed). I score the test for you and take a look at where you could use improvement. Many students are understandably worried about the diagnostic test, but it's not an indication of how you will do the day of the real test; it just helps us see where we need to concentrate our efforts in sessions. In our first session, we will talk about your experience with the diagnostic test and go over some grammar rules and tips in hope of seeing some improvement on the next practice test. Students will often see quick improvement early on once they learn some basic grammar rules and test-taking strategies. Further practice yields even better scores, but it will depend on learning more advanced grammar and reading strategies.

French and Spanish language students: With new students I talk about their school assignments, and upcoming quizzes and exams. During the first session, I will talk to the student about his/her past experience with French or Spanish, and try to get a clear sense of their level of proficiency. Once I know the gaps or problem areas in a student's understanding of the language, we will develop a program for improving his/her overall profiency, and his/her class grades!
