About Mary Etta

Mary Etta Jeske's conveys her passion for the beauty of life through her drawings, pastels,

acrylics, watercolors, and oil paintings. Since 1993 she has been teaching as an art

instructor. Mary Etta’s artistic journey began much earlier when she was encouraged at the

age of five to draw and paint by her father, brother, and sister (all oil-painting artists. She

later earned a scholarship to the Mitchell School of Fine Art in Maryland, where she studied

for four years in the tradition of the "Old Masters," and learned the methods of alla prima in

oil painting and rendered portraits in pastel. She studied under noted portrait artist, Elizabeth

"Polly" Byrd Mitchell and Master Artist Richard House.

After attending The Mitchell School, Mary Etta began teaching still life, flowers, animals,

landscapes, people and seascapes to children. She also worked for St. Augustine's school

in Elkridge, Md. and taught art to students of all levels.

Today, Mary Etta emphasizes classical realism through her private art classes and has

given many demonstrations and children's workshops. More recently, she was

commissioned to restore 14 large, three-dimensional stations of the Way of the Cross. She

continues to do commissioned art and donates her work to fundraisers. Many corporations

and private collectors have purchased her work in group shows and galleries.

I enjoy creating, teaching and expressing the beauty of life in art. To me, teaching art is a joy because it helps others. After my experience of being sick, with cancer and having to go through chemo, I realized how drawing and painting help keep my mind off the pain. I believe art helps to heal, keep you calm, build up your confidence and to helps you focus.

I grew up learning how to draw and paint since I was five from my Father, Sister, and Brother, (who were oil painting artists). I then went to The Mitchell School of Fine Art, in Maryland and studied there full-time for four years. Then I worked at Saint Augustine's, in Maryland hired me to teach art pre-k - 8th grade for four years. I have always taught privately since 1993 and continue to do so out of my studio, Art Studio Mae. Many corporations and private collectors have purchased my work in group shows and galleries.

About the lesson

I would ask the student if they have any previous works that they could show me. If they are a beginner I would begin with the medium of the pencil. It's very important to learn the basics of drawing before venturing into painting. Through drawing they learn to draw the bigger shapes and to identify the negative and positive spaces in a composition. It's important they understand what is the difference between, contour line and blocking in and what's the difference between a sketch and a drawing. I introduce the value scale and how to train your eyes to see hightlights, light, medium, reflected and dark values in a subject. Lastly, I discuss incorporating detail in the composition. After learning how to draw then they're ready to paint.
