About Ryan

Probably the fact that I am 100% self taught. Nature and experience have been my teachers. My artisitc journey has taught me so many lessons that I incorporate into my artistic process and I thoroughly enjoy sharing this knoweldge with others.

The lesson's I've learned through my artistic journey have given me a thorough understanding of artistic princiapls like value, shape, edge, and composition. This is the foundation of the artistic knowledge I will share. However, it's my ability to simply and effectively communicate these principals to you along with guiding you through using these principals in the art you'll create which makes me an effective art teacher.

Another big area I stand out is that I'm very diverse in my artisic medium and subject-matter. I'm well versed in drawing and oil painting. And I definitely believe that if you can draw... you can paint! Color, isn't nearly as important as value in creating great art!

I love drawing and painting everything from detailed figurative work and portraits to the organic foms of the landscape. Whether it's drawing or paitinging, so many of the princapls are the same.

I love teaching students how to build the skill and confdence to more easily create the image that they want on a 2 dimentional surface.

I will teach you how to identify the exact values, shapes, colors and edges that you are looking at, so you have a road map of exactly what is going on in the image/scene and how these elements help build what you are looking at and wanting to artistically create.

And from here the challenge is knowing exactly where does this detail go on a piece of paper or canvas? I enjoy coaching students on how to know where to put things.... whether it be a portrait or a landscape! This is often one of the biggest challenges students face. Once the location is understood, I will help you understand the values, shapes, and edges that your marks will produce and how they work together to help build your art.

I have an 8 year old daughter who I have drawn and painted many times. Teaching her is such a joy. Most of my clients are now adults, but I happy to teach anyone who wants to learn.

I have been drawing and painting for 20+ years. I have read tons of art books and am for the most part a self taught artist.

About the lesson

Initial meeting to get to know student and their artistic interests and goals. Share with them my artistic process and how I learned to first draw and then paint... and then get started with the very basics.

I will help students identify what they "actually" see and put it on paper. Beginners usually have a challenge, because they put on paper what they "think" they see and it doesnt look like what they actually see. What we do see and think we see are very different! It's fun and liberating as we learn to do this in art and I will help students with this process and gain confidence to rapidly grow there drawing/painting skills.

Children and adults

Get to know the teacher with an initial session. Look at their work and see if you are drawn to it. Ask about their process.

Giving my wife and daughter a framed portrait of our daughter as an infant for Christmas. It now hangs in our living room.
