About Joseph

I have experience working as a teaching assistant (TA) for the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. I held office hours for classes of over 100 students for Engineering Mechanics and Intro to Engineering Computing courses. Most recently, I was a TA for the Summer Science Program, a high school astrophysics program affiliated with CalTech, Harvey Mudd, and MIT.

Perhaps the most enjoyable thing about helping students is seeing them understand a concept and being able to apply it to solve other problems. Thus, my goal when helping anyone is to help them grasp the topic rather than simply providing an answer.

- Conducted recitation sessions and helped high school students with astronomy, math, physics, and programming

- Held office hours for Intro to Engineering Computing, where students learned numerical methods and programming in Fortran

- Held office hours for Engineering Mechanics II, where students learned to apply physics to solve engineering problems

About the lesson

I like to follow the process below:

1. Learn about the student's background and experience with the material

2. Ask what, if any, attempts have been made to solve a problem or understand the topic

3. If the student has sufficient knowledge of the fundamentals required by the problem, I would ask guiding questions and give suggestions on solving the problem.

4. If not, I would provide these fundamentals then try to ask guiding questions.

5. Once the student has had time to think through the problem, I would go over my own approach and outline my specific thought process.

I have worked with a wide variety of students, from early high school to college. Most notably, the high school students who I have helped range from those who are struggling with Algebra to those who are learning college-level Calculus and Linear Algebra.
