About Harleigh

I have always had a passion for reading and writing, and although I am employed as a scientist, I always excelled in my English courses. When studying at Rutgers for my technical career, I tutored ESL, grammar, and expository writing. I loved connecting with my students and helping them improve their commmunication.

For three years, I tutored at one of Rutgers University's top writing centers. I began as an expository writing tutor and quickly started tutoring ESL and grammar to other students. I ran weekly office hours for grammar tutoring where I would proofread a myriad of papers from students of all majors and help these students understand their mistakes. In my opinion, tutoring is very rewarding for both parties.

I always excelled in my writing courses even though I had a passion for pursuing my degree in science, but I knew I had a talent for connecting points, making arguments, and ensuring my understanding of proper grammar. I believe this ability stemmed from my hobby of reading.

I have three years of tutoring experience for a writing center at Rutgers University. I tutored all levels of students, both undergraduate and graduate, on expository writing and grammar. I also was responsible for leading grammar office hours where students from any class, not just a writing class, could have me review their writing for errors and clarity. In addition, I worked with many students enrolled in ESL courses. Besides tutoring, I taught a seminar course at Rutgers that had 24 students.

About the lesson

When working with a new student, I like to spend time discussing my experience and background, while also taking the time to get to know more about their personality, work ethic, favorite classes, and more. Once the student is comfortable, I begin discussing why they signed up for tutoring and what they hope to get out of the tutoring sessions.

I have worked with undergraduate students, graduate students, and foreign exchange from all different types of majors.

Be honest and open about what issues you may be struggling with that you want your tutor to help you improve. Good communication is key

I recently graduated with my Masters of Business and Science Degree from Rutgers University. This is one of my greatest academic accomplishments, and I am already missing school.
