About Beth
Students who are struggling readers or who have a learning disability deserve the chance to read interesting, well written materials with challenging content. I have always loved reading to discover the wealth of information contained in books and electronic sources, and I want to bring this same opportunity to students and adults who need reading support and coaching. My certification in secondary level special education and my experience with children from a variety of social and economic backgrounds, along with my enthusiam, make me the perfect reading and writing coach for students who have had ample phonics lessons but still struggle to read and who have a hunger to learn about interesting new topics. I am not interested in working on work sheets or one-off lessons. I want to read a variety of reading materials, help students to reinforce their reading skills through writing, and have interesting conversations about books and all sorts of content.
I started out as a classroom teacher, working with students with learning disability.
I have a secondary level special education teaching certification in the state of Texas. I taught for about eight years. I currently work in educational publishing and have a lot of opportunity to keep up with the latest reading research. I'm a fan of youth fiction and children's books that have appeal for all ages.

At the first meeting, I would like to discuss the student's interests, strengths, and weaknesses. I want to hear from the student what their goals are and what books or topics they would like to read.
Middle school and high school students with reading and learning disability
Find a teacher who knows a lot of good books and who will not give you boring practice worksheets but will read with you and teach you how to improve your reading, writing, and vocabulary.
Before the pandemic I was a community volunteer with an after school program. I taught elementary kids to ride their bikes safely in a group on the neighborhood streets.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What do you want to read? Is it a particular book or is it a topic or is it several things?
