About Russell
Hi I'm Russell! I've always had a love for teaching, and currently am a Masters of Arts in Teaching student at UIC. By 2022 I hope to complete my Masters and have a classroom of my own, but until then, I want to continue working to support students any way I can. The services I feel I can best offer at present are in the disciplines of German, History, English, and Writing.
Though I am working towards my Ed Masters now, I have a wealth of experience as an educator. In my former capacity at the International Academy in the Detroit area I taught a regular history course and work actively in the German classrooms. The year previous I spent working as a language teacher in Germany while on a Fulbright. This experience help to hone my own German skills and build skills I needed as an educator. As such, I offer scaffolded and personalized lessons for each student I work with, and am comfortable providing my own and/or incorporating existing materials students may possess.
I am of course also an active learner myself! I am 2018 graduate of Macalester College, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude with an award for my work in the field of Gender History. Currently I try to stay as engaged and critical as ever by reading and talking with my peers.
I have worked in a variety of educational capacities, listed below.
-Middle School English Instructor (2017, 2018 Northfield Mount Hermon School, MA)
-High School Fine Arts Instructor (2017, 2018 Northfield Mount Hermon School, MA)
-History Classroom Assistant (2017,2018, Gordon Parks School MN )
-Fulbright Teaching Grant (2018-19 Ludwigshafen, GE)
-German/History Graduate Assistant (2019-20 International Academy Oakland County, MI)
-Head Debate Coach (2019-2020 Al-Furqan Academy Detroit, MI)

After hopefully briefly discussing (by phone or email) a student's needs, I will usually prepare a short lesson/activity for the first session to guage where the student is at. We will then work together to set goals, and help me to understand what might be most helpful. After that, sessions are fairly straightforward, where I will provide lessons or supplement those provided in school, that I feel help to meet the student's goals best.
I have truly worked with students from a great diversity of backgrounds. I got my start doing youth development for low income youth in Chicagoland, and have since worked with students aged 12-25 in Detroit, Massachussetts, and Germany. I currently coach middle schoolers at a community Muslim academy in Detroit, and teach at a relatively elite high school in Bloomfield. I have worked with students from a diversity of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as with students who didn't have English as their native language.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should consider two primary questions in my opinion. First, what are their goals with the subject. This can be long and short term, but we will need to figure out where they want to be so we can determine how to get there.
Second, I feel it is very important for students to consider what positive educational experiences they have had, especially if there are any in the subject at hand. Conversely, they may also think about what sort of things they find particularly challenging in the subject. This will me to figure out how they might learn best, and cater lessons to them.
