About James

I am an independent tutor passionate about helping educate the next generation of leaders, thinkers, activists, policy makers, and creative minds. I have five years of tutoring experience and seven years of experience working with kids in a variety of educational and developmental settings. My style is collaborative and compassionate, but I focus extensively on fostering independent critical thinking. I am not simply an answer key. The students I work with willl be challenged but always feel supported. I have a Bachelor's Degree in political science from Northwestern University and have tutored primarily in politics, statistics, economics, geometry, and algebra. I most enjoy watching young minds adapt to new challenges and grow beyond what they thought their potential was. It is so rewarding to feel a part of equipping the next generation with the tools they will need for success and to solve some of the world's most complex problems. I love that challenge. And there is nothing like the moment a concept or idea clicks for a student you are teaching. I am a people person, and getting to meet and learn from passionate, energetic people every day fuels me.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in politicall science. I also worked for three years at Northwestern University tutoring student athletes in subjects from politics to economics to statistics. Before that, I helped tutor students for the HSPT and advised several students on their college application process and their application essays. Finally, I worked for four years with kids as a camp counselor and have worked with various afterschool programs. I love kids and I especially love watching the lightbulb go on in a student's head when they finally grasp a difficult concept.

About the lesson

My primary motive at first is to assess each student's current level and need. My initial meeting will be used to evaluate the student's ability in the subject matter and identify the areas where the most growth and help is needed. I also use the first session to get a sense of the student's learning style so that I may tailor my tutoring approach to how the student best absorbs content.
