About Andrea
Past students have said they appreciate how I'm patient and encouraging as I help them work through the writing process. They also say they benefited from my explanations and that my suggestions helped their writing be stronger.
I have taught college writing at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Marist College (Poughkeepsie, NY), and the Community College of Aurora (Aurora, CO). I once received a Whose Who Among College Teachers award after being nominated by a student.
Writing is one thing many people say they "just can't do" or "will never be good at." What I enjoy most about working with writers of all ages is helping them feel more confident with the choices they make when they write for a particular purpose like an assignment or a letter or a review. It's rewarding to help people feel more equipped to succeed.
I was a Graduate Assistant with teaching responsibilities when I got my M.A. in English. I enjoyed it so much that I held various adjunct instructor positions as my family moved from NE to NY to CO.
I've taught freshman composition I (Academic Writing) and II (Academic Writing and Research) in 3 states. Also, for the past few years I have worked with middle school students and helped them prepare for writing assignments they will have in high school.

I would ask a new student to tell me about the assignment as they understand it and what they think they will need the most help with. I'd also ask them what experience they have had with writing essays to hear about what skills they already have to build on. Finally, I would ask them what their goal is.
I have spent a majority of my time teaching college students, but I have also assisted teachers as a Para-Professional in middle school.
I would advise a student interested in hiring a writing teacher to ask them questions like: What do you consider to be a good outcome when working with a student (just good grades or overall improvement in the process)? How do you feel about a student's individual voice expressing itself in their writing (no place for it in assigned writing or it can always be worked-in to a draft)?
I have recently enjoyed reading a good YA (Young Adult) novel (Verify) by Joelle Charbonneau at my parents' cabin on the lake.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
A student should be able to answer several questions before talking to a teacher about their needs: What are my main goals for this project? What strengths and weaknesses should I reveal about my abilities in this area? Have I prepared myself by understanding all the details (# of pages, content, deadlines, etc.) required for this assignment?
