About Adriana

As a person who learned English as a second language, I know how difficult and confusing the language can be. Over time, I've learned to love writing and I embrace the power it has to communicate our ideas to others. I hope to be able to help students master their use of English and hone their writing skills because English and writing are important for almost every career. I hope to be a friendly and approachable tutor that students can come to with any questions they may have, and I hope to inspire students to have fun with English and writing.

Ever since I was in high school, I have loved helping others with English classes, especially with writing. I have helped my Spanish-speaking friends become fluent in English by practicing key vocabulary words and having conversations about a variety of topics. I have helped high school seniors write powerful college application essays that have gotten them into some of the most prestigious universities in the United States. I have helped my friends boost their grades in college writing seminars by providing a structured approach to essay writing and revision. I am very passionate about helping kids and teens grow and succeed! I enjoy seeing the improvement in students' writing after my careful guidance and feedback. Above all, I enjoy watching students who previously struggled with and hated English learn to love it instead.

I have a B.A. in Medicine, Science, and Humanities from Johns Hopkins University. Within my major, I took and aced many writing intensive courses involving a wide range of topics, including English literature, psychology, Spanish-English translation, law, art history, biostatistics, and film. I have experience writing effective college application essays as well as high school- and collegiate-level papers. While my strongest suit is evidence-based writing, I also enjoy nonfiction and argumentative writing.

About the lesson

I typically first get to know the student in order to create a more personal connection. I find this helps us to work better together! We discuss any concerns as well as where they are currently at (i.e., how comfortable do they feel with English/writing, was anything covered in class recently that was confusing to them, are there any assignments that are causing them trouble). If the student needs help with a specific writing task, I like to talk with them about the topic or prompt to make sure that we both understand it at its base level. Then I like to brainstorm with the student and help them develop the central idea or argument that they will write about. Once the student has written a first draft, I typically read through it carefully with the student and provide feedback about things such as vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, and overall flow. If something doesn't make sense, we discuss what the student was trying to say and make a decision on the best way to phrase it to effectively convey that thought.

Try to find someone that you get along well with. In my experience as a student, if you get along well with your tutor or teacher, you are more likely to enjoy the subject and will be more engaged, which in turn will help you be more successful!
