About Connie

PhD student in Information Sciences, Professional Librarian with a Masters in Information Science and a BA in Sociology. Capable of providing assistance and instruction on a wide variety of topics.

TEFL certified.

I love bringing joy to things that seem dull. Tasks don't have to be something to dread, and any problem can be worked through with enough of a support system.

I had that support system growing up with the care of my local librarians, and it's brought me far in life. I'd love to be that support system for others.

I began tutoring in high school as a volunteer with the younger students. In college I was hired on with the library where I was able to tutor through the writing center and reference desk.

I have a BA in Sociology and a Masters in Library and Information Science. I currently study at UMD College Park for my PhD and have worked as a public librarian. I provide assistance with school work and research regularly as part of my normal duties.

I am also TEFL certified.

About the lesson

Figuring out their learning style is the first important step in working with any new student. After establishing how a student learns best, the next step is to earn their trust and gain their buy-in on the learning process to promote active engagement.

Once a rapport has been established, diving into the nitty-gritty process of learning content can happen without pushback.

I have worked with elementary, high school, and college students.

I have some experience tutoring adult learners for career counseling as well.

Make sure the teacher is a good fit for you personality-wise. Sometimes people don't jive, and that's okay! You need to be comfortable to learn well.

Before the lockdowns began I had the pleasure of attending the Public Library Association national conference in Nashville as a representative of my library system. Not only was it a wonderful learning experience to be around so many leaders in the field, it was a chance to explore a new city and reconnect with an old friend living there.

The city skyline was stunning from my hotel room - but it could have given Chicago a run for its money with how windy it was that week! Overall it was an absolute blast and I'm grateful to have experienced it.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about whether they don't want/like to do something, or if that thing is actually difficult for them to do. Sometimes procrastination can mask stress over a task that's truly difficult, and sometimes it's just a product of dislike.
