About Sylvia

I have taught English Language Arts for over 20 years and am certified to teach English as a New Language. I specialize in teaching the code of the language to struggling readers - it works! I am willing to come to your home or you can come to mine. I look forward to working with children or adults who have a passion for learning!

I thoroughly enjoy witnessing people reaching new goals. I love working with diverse, interesting people.

My first public school teaching job was in Schenectady as an English as a New Language tutor. Teaching English language learners has remained a passion of mine. For the past 20 years I have worked in Louisville, KY, as a public educator. Six of those years were in English as a New Language and the rest were mostly teaching reading and other language arts. I also have two years of full-time experience as a technology teacher.

I have over 20 years of certified teaching experience including eight years teaching English Language Learners. I have had a great deal of training and experience in how to help struggling readers, and I have a passion for this. In addition to a Masters degree in education, I have a Master of Fine Arts in writing.

About the lesson

In order to help a student with maximum efficiency, I will assess their skills and knowledge with non-stressful, informal surveys. While doing so, I will work on building a relationship of trust and getting to know my new student. I believe in conveying utmost respect for each individual I work with and their family members, and that is how I truly feel. I have many materials at my disposal to use for effective instruction once I've figured out what my student needs.

I have worked mostly with elementary age students, but not solely. I also have experience working with middle schoolers, high schoolers, and adults.

My advice is to find a teacher that you are certain will help you. If after the first or second session you don't have a sense of excitement over learning from him or her, move on to someone else. Knowledge and skills are some of your most important assets for a successful life, and you can't afford to stick with someone who can't help you to reach your goals.

I just retired from my teaching job in Louisville, KY, in order to be close to my daughter who is about to give birth to my first grandchild. I was raised in Rotterdam, NY, and find it exciting to be back home. However, I will dearly miss the wonderful students I had in Kentucky this past year. They were amazing and eager to learn.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think clearly about what they hope to accomplish. They should think about what methods and materials have helped them in the past, and be able to explain anything like this to their prospective or new teacher. They should also come prepared to have a positive attitude toward their goals and toward the teacher who really desires to help him or her with those goals.
