About Caitlin
I am a passionate learner and educator. I have a Masters degree in the Humanities from the University of Chicago with a special focus of Japanese and Art History, following the study of Italian and Art History as an undergraduate. I have spent significant time studying foreign languages (including Latin and Portuguese) and have taught independently as a tutor and as a Teaching Assistant so I am comfortable in many teaching settings.
I love to take what I have learned as a student and bring that into my teaching style. Understanding that everyone learns a bit differently, I think it is important to remain flexible and student-focused.
I also have a certificate for Teaching English in a Foreign Language (TEFL) and additional certification hours for specializing in online teaching.
While my teaching experience is primarily focused on languages, I have a great passion for Art History and can help you with research/writing as well, having participate in numerous writing workshops and courses. In the progress towards writing a Masters thesis I became well versed on proper writing and feedback practices.
I started as an undergraduate when I was a Teaching Assistant in Italian studies classes.
My love of languages continued to grow as I started learning more languages and I decided to get TEFL certified to help other gain confidence in the hugely important skill of forgein languages.
I have previous experience as a Teaching Assistant in Italian Language classes where I led classes, proctored exams, and held Office Hours to assist student one-on-one. The office hours were absolutely my preferred part of the job.
I also tutored privately in Italian studies and have a Taching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate. The certification process was uuseful both for English teaching and language teaching as a whole.
I have also taken classes as a studnet studying pedogocial texts as well to best learn new teaching styles so I can choose what best fits my students needs.
I have also spent time aborad in both Italy and Japan to hone my language skills, if you are interested in learning either of those languages.

I like to start out getting to know what a students goals are, and what their learning style is. I love one-on-one tutoring because you can target lessons to individual needs. Once we meet I can create a lesson plan to meet your goals, long or short term, and I like to revisit them as we progress as well. This ensures we can keep working towards the best goals for you!
I love having a positive teacher-student relationship and strive to keep my classes as stress-free as possible. Learning should be enjoyable!
I have largely worked with college aged students, at varying levels. I particularly enjoy language classes, because everyone starts out at the same level - not knowing the language at all.
While there are different techniques for teaching quite young children, my methods remain the same for a large range of students. Though the subject matter discussed in the language is more lively and colorful for kids.
If you are an adult with specific requests in learning English speficially, I can be more specific in classes if you want, say, business language classes or if you are studying for a specific examination.
Even if we are not a good fit, I hope you find the best tutor for you! (and if that's me, all the better!) Make sure to find someone that targets your needs specifically though. The benefit of individual tutoring really is that you get personalized attention, so please find someone that can understand your needs and learing style, not just teach alesson plan the same way to everyone.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If you're curious what to ask to find the right fit, I find asking a person about hteir personal experiences learning the material can be more helpful than learning about their teaching experience. In part, because some people are great teachers because of lived experience rather than education.
How someone learns, and thinks about learning, is always reflected in their teaching style.
