About Zach

Teaching music is a huge part of my life. I started teaching on my own in 2013, and then I devoted the next 4 years to teaching at Band Aid School of Music in Austin, Texas, rated the #1 Rock Band Program in the country. There, working alongside some of the most skilled musicians I know, I learned to guide students by adapting to their needs and inspiring a passion for their instrument. Since leaving Austin, I've applied those lessons to my teaching style for students in Las Vegas, Nevada, and right here in Albuquerque!

I have extensive experience working with all age groups and skill levels, from teaching a preschooler's first music lessons, to guiding a teen band to 1st place in Austin's 2017 Jam Fest. I've even helped some of my students' parents finally pick up that old guitar and put it to use! It's never too soon OR too late to pursue your musical goals, whatever the scale!

As a kid, I just wanted to pick up a guitar and rock 'n roll. Luckily in my case, my parents decided I could benefit from started with classical guitar lessons. I studied under a fantastic guitarist for 3 years, getting a good feel for my own learning process, and then I took it into my own hands! Since then, I've played guitar and bass in various bands around Austin (including as an emergency fill-in for some of my students' bands!), studied opera and music theory at the University of Georgia, and honed my teaching skills alongside some of Austin's best musicians.

About the lesson

My process with any student is tailor-made to their individual needs and goals, and no two are really alike! I like to sit down with the student, and the parents of younger students, and decide together what would be the best way to get started. Once I have an understanding of the student's goals, I'll continue to adapt as I learn more about the student themself, and how best to get them where they'd like to be!

All kinds! Some highlights include:

Teaching a pair of brothers who play guitar and bass in their family gospel band

Teaching a mother/daughter duo with hugely varied goals and skill levels

Working with several summer camp rock bands ranging from ages 8-18

Developing three full-time bands over several years, helping them work up setlists, write/record original songs, reach out to music venues and book shows, and advise them in a myriad of ways about how to be a successful band

And far more one-on-one guitar and bass lessons than I can count with students ages 4-40 of a wide range of skill levels!

When looking for a teacher, my best advice is just to have an idea of your goals! Whether they are big or small, short- or long-term, performance- or theory-based, it's good to know what you're looking for, and see if a potential teacher matches up with what YOU need!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If you have an idea of what you're looking for, all that's really necessary is finding out of a teacher is able to accommodate to your needs! Be prepared to ask about a teacher's experience helping students meet goals similar to yours, and what their plan is to help YOU specifically.

Details

Typically, I come to students' homes for one hour per week, which is $40. My pricing scale is somewhat variable though, and depends on a few factors: whether I come to the student or the student comes to me, if our lessons are online via video chat, how long or short the lessons are, etc. Please feel free to contact me with ANY pricing questions!
