About Patrick

I teach in a way that takes the student on a cumalitive journey treating music as a "language." Specifically, from the start, part of their instruction will deal with sight-reading and theory. Also when they have a couple of years under their belt I will begin lessons in the various styles. This imparts upon the student a growing understanding of what music they hear is actually composed of and the process another musician may go through in order to perform the piece. So whether or not they play their instrument into the future they will always have an informed and respectful ability to listen and appreciate to what they're hearing.

Watching students light up when they first play something that sounds like real music to them. Its a "Wow...I can really do this" moment .

I am finishing up a BA in Music/-Theatre degree from the University of La Verne. About 4 years out of school I began teaching at Berri"s Music World. After a year it wad clear I should go out on my own. For the next 12 years I was working full time as a private instructor, serving Ventura and West La Counties. Forbthe last 10 years Ive been focused primarily on my guitar playing and composition.

See what about music interests them. What are they listening to. I'm pretty strict about teaching from a balanced curriculum including sight reading, theory, repertoire, and technique. But without fail I get them improvising in the first lesson and as they begin creating their own little nuggets of music they become interested in what they have created and then they're hooked.
