About Jamie

First and formost I love creating music. Whether that is playing, writing, or teaching. Making music is basically all I have done for the past 20+yrs. I play and perform on multiple instruments so that gives me an insight into how different instruments interact with one another either in a band situation or songwriting/arranging. My main goal as a teacher is to get you playing and making music as soon as possible. I want you to enjoy learning music by playing your favorite songs and really be excited about the whole process. Through learning songs the lessons and supplemental materials can become very personalized to the students' interests.

I throughly love sharing my knowledge and experience with my students. Knowing the joy music brings to my life fills me with the passion to pass it along to my students. Every student gets their own Google Classroom where the lesson materials and communications can happen quickly and directly. I record each lesson and provide the replay of the lesson for future reference. I also have courses which I have created to further help supplement the learning process. Each student will have access to these courses if they so choose.

I started teaching in Los Angeles when I stopped touring. I started teaching private lessons by word of mouth. I moved to Chicago and started teaching private lessons also through word of mouth until a guy I was playing with in a band started his own school which I was one of the founding teachers. I helped develop the curriculum and the culture which eventually the school was sold and renamed.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Appalachian State University and a Journeyman and Professional Certificate in Music Performance from Musicians Institute. I have been a studio musician for Westlake Studios in Los Angeles and a national touring artist for many years. I have been playing in various bands ranging from rock, country, indie, metal, pop, reggae, blues, and jazz throughout my 12yrs living in Chicago. I was a founding member/teacher of the Rock House in Wilmette, IL which was eventually bought and turnered into Twelve Tone Music School in which I was an Assistant Music Director and founding teacher.

About the lesson

I ask the student about their musical experience, what type of music they like/want to play, and what goals they have for themselves. Once the preliminary questions are answered I start the process of getting the student making music. I typically start teaching beginners open chords and how to understand chord charts for guitar, root notes on bass, note names and functional chords to get started on piano, and for drums I would start with a basic, universal drum beat that is the foundation for moving forward. For more experienced players I ask the same intake questions and from there begin to work on building a more solid foundation focusing on filling in any gaps the student might have and then continue to move forward on the instrument.

I work with clients that range from absolute beginners to seasoned professionals. I work with children to adults. I work with persons with disabilities. If you want to make music, I want to teach you!

I would advise potential students to find a teacher who is engaged and listens to what the student wants opposed to what the teacher wants. My job as a teacher is to guide the student through the process of learning to play an instrument and streamline that process to make it as easy and fun as possible.

Opening for Jerrod Niemann was a very cool experience. Playing a sold out show at Chicago's biggest country venue was definitely a fond memory.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I typically ask new students what type of music they like. What bands or artists are they listening to and what goals are they trying to accomplish. Someone with more experience might want to think about more specific questions like building better technique or learning music theory.
