About Paul
My studio is a quiet, safe smoke free space located across the street from Lion’s park in Spearfish SD. It is centrally located with Black Hills State and the grade schools, high school and middle school all being within 4 to 8 blocks. The studio is owned by an active musician and retired retired BHSU faculty who teaches piano in her home next door. The atmosphere is full of music.
I have been teaching guitar for almost twenty years. In that time I have had the privilege to work with students from all backgrounds and ages. Most of my students have been young beginners just getting started, learning the very basics of how to hold the guitar and learning their first chords. In recent years I have seen more retirees and young professionals looking to realize their dream of playing the guitar. In 2014 I began teaching as adjunct at Black Hills State University where I have taught a number of beginners and have also taught students on their way to earning Guitar Certificates as well as a Major in Music with an emphasis on guitar.
While in college one of my teachers suggested there was a need on campus for guitar instruction and suggested I hang up a few fliers and see what happens.
I have a bachelor’s degree in education and have studied guitar both formally and informally for 35 years.

The first thing I do is find out what the students previous experience with guitar has been and what their goals are.
I have worked with students from many ages and backgrounds. The majority of my students have been young beginners. I have also taught college aged students as well as retirees.
Look for a teacher with experience teaching guitar and teaching in the style you are interested in. Look for a teacher with knowledge and understanding of how music works. A little bit of instruction in this area can go a long way.
Because of recent events with covid many events being cancelled. The most recent event i can think of was Christmas 2019 Music at the Booth House on the Grounds of the DC Booth National Fish Hatchery in Spearfish. I was asked to perform an hour of Christmas music with my students as part of program highlighting local musicians and teachers.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Over the years students seem to be busier and busier. Guitar is usually just one of many extracurricular activities. I don’t see this as a problem. Busy students are often highly motivated and work very hard. However, it seems to me that there is a point where scheduling can become a problem. The big question to think about is time. Is the family willing to commit to getting the young guitarist to one hour or half hour long lesson a week? Is the student able or willing to find a little bit of time to commit to practice.
