About Joe

Here at Pear Tree Self Defense Center, we keep the classes intentionally small so that we can ensure that each student has personal instruction from one of our highly trained instructors. Master Sifu, (Chief Instructor), Joe Hutchings has over 50 years martial arts training and brings all of his experiences in to your training.

Jeet Kune Do is a very personal martial art that was developed by Bruce Lee for actual combat in the street and was called ‘Scientific Street Fighting’ by Bruce Lee. Therefore, we only teach those that are 18 and over. We also train people in my own certified martial art of Li Shu Zewei Do. There is no sport application or fancy aesthetics in either of these methods. They both are efficient and effective ways of self-defense on the streets.

I started teaching a few school friends when I was 14 in 1972. My first professional school was opened in 1977 and I have taught self defense since.

I am a Master Sifu in the Original Oakland Jeet Kune Do and a Full Instructor in the Concepts Jeet Kune Do as well as various black belts in other martial arts. I have also developed my own recognized system of Li Shu Zewei Do with is a combination of fighting techniques that I have learned and developed over 50 years of training.

About the lesson

We teach every student individually. Our instructors teach the students one on one to insure good technique understanding as well as technique development.

I have worked with all types of students. Mostly they have been health adults that wanted to learn self defense, however I have also worked with people who have physical challenges. As long as you can understand what I ask of you and try to do those things, you could be a good student at Pear Tree.

Make sure your teacher really knows what they are doing. Check their lineage as far as martial arts training. Do not believe anyone who can't prove where they trained or who their teaches are.

I have promoted several students to full instructor level with one exceptional student earning his Masters Degree in Jeet Kune Do.

Sifu Hutchings knows his stuff - this is the only school in Kansas with a legitimate lineage going all the way back to Bruce Lee and James Lee, and it shows in the quality of training - if you're wanting to study a super-effective self defense system that will have you confidently ready to deal with almost anything within 2 years, then this is the place.

But more than that is the friendly and welcoming environment - this school has become my second family, and Sifu Hutchings my big brother. I love coming to class because I love these people and can't imagine my life without this school being part of it.
