About Clay

There are many ways to relate mathematical concepts to a student. My experience as a tutor and mathematician allows for me to relay the subject matter in such a way that you as an individual can understand (not just memorize!) the course material. That, in my opinion, is the key to success in academics.

I have been a math tutor since 2013, where i began tutoring at Western State Colorado Univeristy. In 2015, I earned my bachelor's degree in mathematics with a 3.98 GPA and went on to tutor privately as a side job. In this time i have had the pleasure of helping out a lot of students.

Whether you need a little brushing up on a particular chapter in your text book, or you require a more holistic approach to math and its many areas of study, I am, and always will be, here to help. I teach math because I love it. If you learn from me, you may begin to see why.

My favorite thing about tutoring is when I see what I call "the lightbulb moment". It's that "Aha! I get it!"moment where a student gains a deeper undertanding of what is being taught. With tutoring, knowing the subject and knowing how to teach it are two different things. I get a lot of satisfaction and enjoyment out of making math accesible to those who think they "aren't good at math."

I went to college at Western State Colorado University, where I graduated with a 3.98 GPA in mathematics. I tutored through the university in between classes during my junior and senior years at Western. Students would come in with questions from any math class they happened to be in and I would help them with the course material. Outside of school based tutoring, I have been private tutoring as a side job (for the past 4 years) in addition to my work as the manager of a local makerspace, specializing in woodworking and metalworking.

When meeting a student for the first time, I generally ask what particular areas of the subject they are struggling with. From there I like to simply start going through the specific problems in question in order to figure out where exactly the misunderstandings are occuring. Since math is a subject that builds upon itself throughout a semester, often times the obstacle a student is facing is due to a gap in understanding of a piece of the process that came up weeks ago and has never been fully understood. By going back and building up the foundation, the subject matter loses that overwhelming quality and things start to fall into place.

I have worked solely with college and highschool students. My energy level and teaching style lends well to these age groups. Outside of this I would be interested in teaching younger students as well.

Finding a teacher who is a good fit for your personality and learning style is paramount in getting both your time and money's worth. Look for commonalities with that teacher. If you arent feeling engaged, the learning will not come nearly as well as if you are comfortable and interacting naturally. Reaching out with a simple message is a great way to test the waters and get a feel for whether or not an instructor is right for you.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Firstly, I recommend coming to a lesson with examples of problems that you need help with. Outside of this, consider any general concepts, rules, identities, formulas, etc. that you don't understand. I also think it is important to bring examples of problems you have gotten incorrect with the work to go along with them. If I am able to see where exactly the mistakes are happening then we can more easily get you back on track!
