About Jeffrey

Mr. Vasquez graduated from St. John’s University in 2000 with a B.S. in Journalism and went on to complete a M.S. in TESOL at St. John’s University in 2004. This will be his 20th year as a professional educator—and his first teaching in Delano.

Mr. Vasquez was born in Brooklyn, raised in Queens and attended schools in the Bronx and Manhattan. He enjoys graphic design and playing video games with his 4 sons. He believes he has the responsibility as an active agent to close the achievement gap and was inspired to relocate his entire family from NYC to prepare and support scholars to and through college.

I began teaching Sunday School while I was in high school and have enjoyed working with young people as long as I can remember. I leapt at the first chance to launch my career in education when the opportunity to teach at the same school where I graduated kindergarten.

I have had the honor of teaching for the last 20 years in a variety of settings in New York City. I have also worked in the capacity of training teachers as well

About the lesson

I will generally administer a brief assessment to guage what mathematical practices the student is either familiar with or struggles to master. The initial meeting is also designed to gather other data about the student based on their learning style and personality attributes.

I have worked with students from diverse backgrounds. Most recently I worked with students from low income neighborhoods in Brooklyn, New York and I am currently serving students in Delano, California as a middle school math teacher during the day.

I would advise any student looking to hire a teacher to first guage their own determination. Are they looking for a quick fix or are they committed to changing lifestyle to construct habits that will support their academic growth over time?

I am most proud to hear about the success of former students - most notably, a young lady I taught as a 6th grader is now in her first year at Standford.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think students should consider the setting in which they learn best and ask themselves what factors are within the scope of their own control and which are not. Students should be able to honestly discern if they either lack the will or the skill necessary to grow academically and communicate this clearly with their tutor/teacher.
