About Abby
Hello! My name is Abby Searles and I am a college student at Texas Christian University. I am a Math (with a concentration in Actuarial Science) major and am minoring in Economics. I love math and love teaching math! I have experience in a variety of subjects. From Elementary Algebra to Calculus 2, I have done it all. I also have experience tutoring middle school and high school math (references upon request). In addition to math tutoring, I have nannied children ages 4-15. I understand that math can be challenging at times, however with a little perseverance and practice it can become much easier. My favorite part of math is the satsifaction after working through a difficult problem! I would love to help make another child's math experience easier!
There is a process every student goes through when solving a math problem. First, there is confusion when looking at the problem. Then, the wheels start turning and the student starts to think through potential solutions. Lastly, they try and sometimes it works. That sometimes is the key. I love to see students understand that it may take a little time to get to the final answer but as long as they keep pushing through, they will get there. I enjoy seeing the students "light bulb" go off when they understand a problem.
My friend's little sibbling struggled with math, so I would work with him through his problems. That was when I realized I could teach others how to do math. Also, in my past nanny experience, I have worked through homework with a variety of age groups.
I am working towards a bachelors degree in mathematics. Also, I got a 5 on the AP Calculus AB test. In addition to this experience, I am currently working towards passing my actuarial exams to work towards becoming an ASA.

1. General introduction to find topics that the student is interested in and form a connection.
2. Give the student a general assessment to determine where the starting point is and what topics need improvement.
3. Create a general timeline for the parent/student to understand where I want them to go.
I have worked with a variety of students. I have helped elementary aged students with learning disabilities, middle school students taking Algebra, and High School/College level students in pre-calculus and calculus.
I would say look for a teacher who is willing to adapt to your needs. Make sure they understand how the student learns as well as what pace they should proceed at. Also, since math can be rigid, I would look for someone who makes math fun and enjoyable!
Moving back into my college house with my friends! After being sent home in March, I missed seeing my best friends and I am happy to be back and Texas.
