About Richard

My name is Richard and I’m a recent graduate from UC Berkeley with a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science with a minor in Data Science. I am interested in tutoring middle school, high school, and college level students in mathematics and computer science. Currently I am working in the cybersecurity industry, but I love teaching as well. I hope to empower students through various means, from increasing their GPA and examination results to giving them a better understanding of the intricate topics at hand. I am based on the coast and am willing to meet at students’ homes or neutral places (such as libraries / coffee shops / book stores) anywhere in San Mateo County; otherwise, Zoom is also an option. Mathematics and Computer Science are two subjects that have really come to define my life. They are topics that I am extremely passionate about and I love to share their wonders with others. It puts a smile on my face to help students better understand these topics and help them see the fascinating realities that lie within them.

I started teaching from a young age. I always loved studying and sharing my affinity for the subject matters at hand with others. Most of my concrete teaching experiences came from college where I became a lead tutor for a top Computer Science class and started offering private tutoring sessions in a variety of topics.

From experiences in high school to college, I have had a lot of exposure in the field of teaching. To begin with, I was the head tutor for the AP Computer Science offering at my high school. My affinity for helping students better grasp STEM subjects continued well into college where I initially became an Academic Assistant for CS 61B, a top computer science class at UC Berkeley in which over 1k students are enrolled every semester. As an Academic Assistant, I was able to make a tangible impact on students in a multitude of ways, from helping them better digest the theoretical topics at hand in lecture to helping them methodically debug their code. Later in college, I began offering private tutoring sessions in Mathematics and Computer Science. In terms of my education, I have a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science along with a Minor in Data Science from UC Berkeley.

About the lesson

Initially, I aim to assess the level at which the student is at in terms of the subject matter at hand. During my studies, I noticed that tutors would either underestimate my understanding of the subject or overestimate how well they believed I understood the topic. I believe that both approaches lead to wasted time for both the tutor and the student. Thus, my philosophy is to assess the knowledge of the student from the beginning to curate a better lesson plan for sessions going forward so that they are as impactful as possible.

I have mostly worked with college-level students and a few high school students.

I would suggest that you keep looking for a teacher that fits your learning style best. Every teacher has their own unique teaching style and likewise students have their own learning style. It is imperative to not give up in the search and to keep looking until you find the teacher that best caters to your needs.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It is imperative for students to identify the topics that they are struggling with instead of keeping the net broad. The more precise the student is in their concerns, the more helpful a tutor can be.
