About Desiree

I have been independently tutoring Math and Chemistry since 2010. I work with students of all ages and skill levels. The greatest achievement a student can reach is an appreciation for the subject and motivation to learn. Often my students dislike homework especially if it is science related. My specialty is turning negative experiences with homework into fun learning empowerments. I know every student has their own learning style and motivation for wanting to learn. Once you figure out their optimal learning style you can tie science to their motivations. Free of charge, I tailor every session to the individuals needs before we even start working. Before each session I research the subject in relation to a variety of learning styles, provide additional study material for the student to take home, and source any information on new innovations related to the subject.

I started tutoring in 2010 part-time while majoring in Chemistry at a local community college. I continued tutoring because it was inspirational showing students how useful science and knowledge is in our society. After graduating from UCLA with a degree in Physical Chemistry I began working in Research and Development for a cosmetic company. My passion for teaching and desire to helps others learn has made it possible to continue tutoring while I work.

Recently, I have had a few of my long-term students graduate. Now I am looking to take on a few new students.

I enjoy watching students gain an appreciation and understanding of science. As a tutor, I have a unique opportunity to supplement their education and help learn skills that can aid them in mastering new subject.

I worked as a teach assistant to a Calculus Professor at Mount San Antonio Community College. I was formally trained by the school to use emotional intelligence to empathize with the students struggles and formulate lessons plans that are inspirational. In addition, at UCLA I took a series of teaching classes for students in K-12. To complete the coursework, I was required to complete onsite classroom training in an elementary school. During all my training, I have maintained a role as an independent tutor of all ages. My students tend to work with me for years. I have helped many young students graduate high school and transition to college.

About the lesson

I need to know what level the student is currently at and what level they want to reach. Before we meet I'd like as much data about the students struggles and goals. I like to structure each new student lesson plan to include different learning techniques and a variety of quick check points for each student to reach during the lesson. This way I can gauge their strengths and weaknesses in an effort to understand their unique learning style. After each session I do a quick review and check in with the student to make sure they are learning the information.
