About Ian
I am a patient, compassionate science enthusiast with a lot of random knowledge. My background and education enable me to go down some rabbit holes if you keep asking the right questions. I like to make subjects interesting and interactive when possible, and my favorite tools are a mini white board and markers (it's easier to make mistakes with these, and making mistakes is encouraged).
I love sharing the aha moment with other people. I personally love solving riddles and puzzles, and that's exactly why I love physical sciences and math. Being able to share the grind and patiently work through a problem can be extremely rewarding, and my favorite experiences are when a student begins with hating a subject but loves it by the end. Anything can be mastered with enough time, even if certain subjects or obstacles feel insurmountable.
I've been tutoring for free and paid since early high school, through undergrad, and now in LA while my girlfriend goes to medical school. From early on I discovered an aptitude for explaining concepts both as a shared experience to create relationships and to keep my own skills sharp.
I have a Master of Science in Astrophysics from the University of St Andrews (in Scotland), and I have a bachelor's in Astronomy from the University of Arizona, with minors in Physics, Math, and Planetary Science.
I have worked as a paid tutor/grader for Astronomy and Planetary Science classes. I also worked as a telescope operator for the public, sharing my knowledge about planets, stars, galaxies, and more- to both college students and families.

In college my peer tutoring worked at a steady pace through the semester, using the syllabus and homework as a guide. I like to use the structure that a class provides and jump around where weaknesses or new material need the most attention. For younger students I need a starting point and prefer to use evaluation tests, but if old enough we can simply talk through subtopics to get on the same page. Once I know what we need to work on I'll create a schedule to hit through topics and meet benchmarks. Where possible I'll make lessons with interactive and hands on components, but that depends highly on the topic.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What is my experience level, have I tested or evaluated myself, and do I have a specific goal or structure I want to use? The answers to these questions can help shape my approach as a tutor to best understand your needs.
